Efficient management and optimum productivity of databases is one of the cornerstones of Data Management for VMware Tanzu. Availability of prompt and real-time notifications about the databases can help Database Administrators take on-time action to resolve or prevent critical issues.

Email Notifications for Failure of Operations of Databases

Data Management for VMware Tanzu allows you to enable email notifications for the failure of database operations. The email notification is sent to the initiator of the operation and the owner of the database. If the initiator of the operation is also the owner of the database, then the email notification is sent only to the Organization Administrator.

Email Notifications for Status Change of Databases

You can also configure email notifications for the change of status of a database to WARNING, CRITICAL, LOST CONNECTIVITY, or FATAL. The email notification is sent only to the owner of the database.

Cases of Cloned, Replica, Restored, and PITR Databases

Cloned and Replica databases retain the same configuration of email notifications as the database which is cloned or replicated. However, you can edit the configurations, as required, after the cloning or replication operation is completed.

Provided that the database being restored is not deleted, restored and PITR databases have the same configuration of email notifications as the database which is restored. If the database being restored is deleted, email notifications for the restored or PITR database is not configured. However, you can configure email notifications for restored or PITR databases, as required, after the restore or PITR operation is completed.

Prerequisite

The Provider Administrator must configure SMTP settings to enable the configuration of email notifications for databases by an Organization User or Organization Administrator.

Procedure

Perform the following procedure to configure email notifications for change of status or failure of operations of databases:

  1. Select Databases from the left navigation pane.

This action displays the Databases view, a table that lists the provisioned databases.

  2. Examine the databases listed in the table, identify the database for which you want to activate or deactivate email notifications, and navigate to that table row.

  3. Click the database VM Name.

The database information Details tab displays.

  4. Locate the Email Notifications section of the pane, and click EDIT.

The Edit Email Notifications dialog displays the Email Address where email notifications will be sent after enabling Emails for Database Status Change and/or Emails for Database Operation Failure.

Note: If the Provider Administrator has not configured SMTP settings, you are not able to view, edit, or add email notifications.

  5. In the Edit Email Notifications dialog, check or uncheck Emails for Database Status Change and/or Emails for Database Operation Failure, as required.

  6. Click SAVE.

You can also configure email notifications for a database while creating it. For more information, see Creating a Database.

Centralized View and Management of Email Notifications

If you click the Settings tab in the left navigation pane, you can see a table in the Settings view that provides the list of databases in the organization with the following information:

Notification Information Description
VM Name Lists the name of the database.
Alert Definition Lists if the notification sent is for DB Operation Failure or DB Status Change.
Action Type Lists if email notifications are sent.
Status Lists if email notifications are Enabled or Disabled.
Last Modified Lists the date and time when the email notification is sent.
Last Modified By Lists the email ID of the user who has last modified the email notifications configuration for the database.

You can select a database in the table and click ENABLE or DISABLE on the top of the table to change the configuration of email notifications for the database. Provided that multiple databases have the same Status of email notification configured, you can select all such databasee in the same page of the table and click ENABLE or DISABLE on the top of the table to change the configuration of email notifications for all the selected databases at once.

Note: Changing the configuration of email notifications for databases in bulk is only possible for the databases listed in the same page of the table. Click the Alerts per page drop down to change the number of alerts listed for databases listed in a page.
