The Virtual Apps Collection feature is new in VMware Identity Manager 3.1. With virtual apps collections, resource configurations are stored in the VMware Identity Manager service instead of the connector. They are managed from the Catalog > Virtual Apps Collection page instead of the Catalog > Manage Desktop Applications > ResourceType pages.

For upgrade from earlier releases, a migration path is available for maintaining any existing resource configurations.

Depending on your installation scenario, you can get started with virtual apps collections directly or follow a migration path.

  • In new 3.1 installations, where the VMware Identity Manager service is version 3.1 and all connectors are version 2017.12.1.0, you can create new virtual apps collections for Horizon, Horizon Cloud, Citrix, or ThinApp resources. Select the Catalog > Virtual Apps Collection tab, review the information, and click Get Started to go to the new page where you can create virtual apps collections. A virtual apps collection contains the configuration information for an integration, such as the servers from which to sync resources, the connector to use, and the sync schedule.

  • If you are upgrading from earlier releases and you upgrade the service to version 3.1 and all connectors to 2017.12.1.0:

    • If Horizon, Horizon Cloud, Citrix, or ThinApp resources were configured in the old installation, after upgrade a migration path is available. You can migrate existing configurations to virtual apps collections using the Migration wizard, which is available by clicking Get Started on the Catalog > Virtual Apps Collection page.

Until you migrate, you can continue to manage your existing resource configurations from the Manage Desktop Applications menu on the Catalog > Application Catalog page.

After you migrate the existing configurations, the new virtual apps collections page is enabled, allowing you to view and edit the migrated configurations and create new ones. The Manage Desktop Applications menu is no longer available.

    • If no resources were configured in the earlier installation, you can create new virtual apps collections for Horizon, Horizon Cloud Service, Citrix, or ThinApp resources by selecting the Catalog > Virtual Apps Collection tab and clicking Get Started.

  • If you are upgrading from an earlier release and you have at least one older connector, external or embedded, you cannot create new virtual apps collections. You can migrate your existing configurations to virtual apps collections by upgrading all connectors to 2017.12.1.0, then using the Migration wizard which is available from the Catalog > Virtual Apps Collection page.

Until you migrate, you can continue to manage your existing resource configurations from the Manage Desktop Applications menu on the Catalog > Application Catalog tab.

After you migrate the existing configurations, the new virtual apps collections page is enabled, allowing you to view and edit the migrated configurations and create new ones. The Manage Desktop Applications menu is no longer available.

Note:

This guide refers to the new virtual apps collection user interface for all integrations. If you continue to use the old user interface from the Manage Desktop Applications menu on the Catalog > Application Catalog page, refer to version 3.0 of the documentation, Setting up Resources in VMware Identity Manager 3.0 (PDF).
