This dashboard gives an overall performance of the datacenter portion of the Desktop as a Service. Together with the Horizon Network Performance dashboard, it provides the complete Horizon overall performance visibility.

Design Consideration

This dashboard works as the entry point of monitoring. It can drill down into the RDS Farms dashboard and VDI Pools dashboards, providing users the ability to branch out as they drill down.

How to Use the Dashboard

Review the two health charts at the top of the dashboard.

  • Count of Pods in the Red shows the number of Horizon Pods with red datacenter KPI. Expect this to be zero all the time, as none of them should be in the red because red is the worst level.

  • Average Performance of all Pods shows the average Datacenter KPI from all the Horizon Pods. It complements the above by showing the actual KPI. As this KPI considers every single running session in your environment, the number should be steady. The analogy in real life is the stock market index. While individual stocks can be volatile, the overall index should be relatively steady on a 5 minutes by 5 minutes basis.

Review the table Pods and World.

  • It lists all the Horizon Pods. If you want to see the overall number, the object Horizon World encompasses all pods.

  • For each pod, the worst performance in the last 1 week is shown. As VMware Aria Operations collects every 5 minutes, there are 12 x 24 x 7 = 2016 data points in a week. This column shows the worst point from the 2016 datapoints.

Select one of the entries in the table.

  • The tables RDS Farms and Hosts and VDI Pools shows the relevant entries.

Review the tables RDS Farms and Hosts if you are using RDS.

  • Pay attention to the Hosts that are not performing.

  • The RDS Host is grouped by their parent farm, to enable comparison across hosts.

Review the tables VDI Pools if you are using VDI.

  • Pay attention to the VDI Pools that are not performing.

Select one of the entries in the table.

  • The performance of the selected entry is shown in the health chart.

  • The relevant properties are automatically shown.

  • You can drill down to a specific RDS Farm or VDI Pool by navigating externally to their associated dashboard and the context is passed. To go back, use the side menu, and not the browser Back button.

Points to Note

This dashboard shows both RDS and VDI. If you have only one of them, collapse the widgets you do not need, and expand the ones you need.

If you change the default time from one week to one day, consider changing 95th percentile to 99th percentile.
