You can view the VMware HCX Manager details deployed per VMware vCenter.

To access the VMware HCX Manager page, from the left navigation pane, go to Environments and select VMware HCX Manager. Alernatively, search HCX Manager to list all the VMware HCX Managers. VMware Aria Operations for Networks also supports search for all the VMware HCX entities.

The VMware HCX Manager page displays the list of sites, click any of the sites to open the VMware HCX Manager details page of that site.

In the VMware HCX Manager details page you see the following sections.

Section Details
Overview
  • In the Summary widget, you see the total number of alerts, appliances, services meshes, L2 extensions, tunnels, and applications communicating over the L2 extension in that site.

    Click the total number on any of these categories to see the associated entities and its details.

  • In the VMware HCX Appliance Topology widget:
    • The Interconnect tab shows the sites paired with the current VMware HCX Manager site. Here, the current VMware HCX Manager site is shown at the top and the sites paired are shown at the bottom.

      Hover over the connection between the sites to see information about the source appliance, destination appliance, unhealthy tunnels, and the total number to tunnel entities.

      If any tunnels have any alerts raised, you can click the number of unhealthy tunnels to view those details. Click the total number of tunnels to see the tunnel entity details.

    • The Network Extension tab shows the topology of how the networks are extended from the current VMware HCX Manager site to the paired sites.

      This topology shows the network extension appliance pairs between the sites connected via tunnels, the L2 networks that are extended via these appliances, and the VMs that belong to these L2 networks. Hover over any of the appliance, L2 networks, VMs, or tunnels to view more details.

      Note:

      You can sometimes see appliances that not connected to any appliances on the paired sites. This occurs when the VMware HCX data source for the paired site of that appliance is not added to VMware Aria Operations for Networks.

    • You can also filter the topology map to show the entities (with their connections) that have critical alerts.
In the Interconnect tab and the Network Extension tab, click on the site to expand it and only one paired site can be in the expanded state.
Note: Only the sites that are added as VMware HCX data sources in VMware Aria Operations for Networks are shown in these tabs.
Alerts You see the list of various alerts raised based on the health of the VMware HCX entities and any misconfigurations between the paired VMware HCX sites.
Flows
VMware Aria Operations for Networks identifies the flows going over the VMware HCX network extension tunnels and enriches them with the information of the VMware HCX L2 extension entity.

  • Top Talking Entities Over L2 Extensions: In this widget, you can see the top talking entities like VM pairs, L2 networks, VMware HCX L2 extensions, etc over the network extension tunnels that belong to the current VMware HCX Manager.

  • Flows Per L2 Extensions: In this widget, you see the number of flows and the related flow metrics for each L2 extension entity in the current VMware HCX Manager.

  • Tromboning Flows Per L2 Extension: In this widget, you see the tromboning flows that traverse from the remote site to the local site and then back to the remote site via the network extension tunnels.

    This helps you to identify if you want to enable Mobility Optimized Networking on the participating L2 extensions so that the flows from VMs in the remote sites can directly traverse over the remote gateway.

  • Flows Per Appliance Pair: In this widget, you see the flows over the network extension tunnels and related metrics grouped by the network extension appliance pairs.
Metrics You see the metrics details of the VMware HCX appliances VMs and hosts, tunnels, and appliance VM network utilization.

In addition to the VMware HCX Manager details page, you can also see the insights about the VMware HCX entities. You can access the VMware HCX entity pages from the VMware HCX Manager details page or directly search for them in the VMware Aria Operations for Networks search.

VMware HCX Site

You see the list of properties and alerts of the selected VMware HCX Site.

VMware HCX Service Mesh

VMware HCX service mesh is a group of VMware HCX services deployed between two site.

In the Flows tab of this VMware HCX Service Mesh entity page, VMware Aria Operations for Networks identifies the flows going over the HCX network extension tunnels and enriches them with the information of the VMware HCX L2 extension entity.

  • Top Talking Entities Over L2 Extensions: In this widget, you can see the top talking entities like VM pairs, L2 networks, VMware HCX L2 extensions, etc over the network extension tunnels that belong to the current VMware HCX Manager.

VMware HCX Service

VMware HCX service is a part of the service mesh that is responsible for the VMware HCX features like interconnect, network extension, bulk migrations, etc.

In this entity page, you see a list of all the properties and alerts of the selected VMware HCX service.

VMware HCX Appliances

VMware HCX appliance is a VM that runs the VMware HCX services. VMware Aria Operations for Networks supports VMware HCX interconnect appliance, VMware HCX network extension appliance, and the VMware HCX WAN optimisation appliance.

In the Flows tab of this VMware HCX Appliances entity page, VMware Aria Operations for Networks identifies the flows going over the HCX network extension tunnels and enriches them with the information of the VMware HCX L2 extension entity.

VMware HCX L2 Extension

VMware HCX L2 extension stretches an L2 network from one site to another.

In the Flows tab of this VMware HCX L2 Extension entity page, VMware Aria Operations for Networks identifies the flows going over the HCX network extension tunnels and enriches them with the information of the VMware HCX L2 extension entity.

In this entity page, you see a list of properties and alerts for the selected VMware HCX compute profile.
