The Carbon Black EDR release versioning convention is as follows.
A version refers to the unique set of numbers that indicate, at a glance, the scope of what was changed. Carbon Black EDR versions its products with 3 sets of numbers: XX.YY.ZZ. Each set of numbers presents an epoch in the product life cycle:
- XX = Major Release
- YY = Minor Release
- ZZ = Maintenance Release
Each piece of Carbon Black EDR (the server, Windows sensor, macOS sensor, and Linux sensor) is released on its own schedule. A release of the server does not necessarily mean a release of new sensors and a release of a new sensor does not mean the other sensors are updated at the same time, nor that a new server is released at the same time.
XX = Major Release
A Major release, sometimes referred to as a Platform release, includes significant architectural changes including the addition of or replacement of significant features. Examples include deprecating API versions, changes to the product architecture, or dramatic changes to the look and feel of the product. A Major release might have limited or no backwards compatibility with the previous Major version. Updating this number triggers a new support cycle.
YY = Minor Release
A Minor release, sometimes also referred to as a Feature release, includes new functionality, features, and bug fixes and replaces functionality and features. This can include user interface updates, major third-party software updates, and/or removal of legacy features. Updating this number triggers a new support cycle.
ZZ = Maintenance Release
A Maintenance release contains bug fixes, stability, and performance improvements, and minor updates to existing features. We recommend that customers always upgrade to the latest Maintenance version. Please note that Maintenance releases do not reset the support cycle. Only a Major or a Minor release triggers a new support cycle.
