You can use the VMware Cloud Director Tenant Portal to reserve IP addresses. The reservation can be time-based or associated with a vApp.

If you want to configure one or more IPs for a service outside of VMware Cloud Director, you can reserve these IP addresses and set them aside.

You can also reserve IP addresses for later service, VM, or vApp configuration in VMware Cloud Director.

If you reserve IP addresses in stretched networks, the addresses are only relevant for your organization and cannot be seen from other organizations.

Prerequisites

Verify that the static IP pools for the network are configured. See step 16 in the Add a Routed Organization Virtual Data Center Network in the VMware Cloud Director Tenant Portal topic.

Procedure

  1. From the primary left navigation panel, select Networking.
  2. Click the name of an organization VDC network.
  3. Under IP Management, select Manual IP reservation and click New.
  4. Enter a name and, optionally, a description for the new reservation.
  5. Select a reservation policy.
    Option Description
Time Based VMware Cloud Director removes the reservation after a specified number of days or never.
vApp Lease Based You associate the reservation with a vApp and when the vApp is deleted, VMware Cloud Director removes the reservation.

You enter the specific reservation policy information on a different page of the wizard.

  6. Select a reservation type.
    Option Description
    Specific IPs

You can choose a specific set of IPs that must include up to 5 addresses.

Number of IPs from a Subnet VMware Cloud Director selects up to 5 IP addresses from the IP pool of the network.

You enter the specific reservation type information on a different page of the wizard.

  7. (Optional) To enable manual configuration of VMs, vApps, and load balancer virtual IPs with the reserved IP addresses, turn on the Allow IP Usage By Service/VM toggle.
You can use this option if you want to set aside the IP addresses for future use while no one else can use them.
  8. (Optional) If you no longer want to keep the IP as part of the reservation after configuring a VM, vApp, or load balancer virtual IP, turn on the Remove IP After Usage toggle.
After use, for example, when you delete the VM, VMware Cloud Director returns the IP address to the IP pool.
  9. Click Next.
  10. If you are creating an IP reservation for specific IPs, add up to 5 addresses that you want to reserve.
  11. If you are creating an IP reservation for a number of IPs from a subnet, select a subnet and how many IPs you want to reserve from it.
For a dual-stack network, you must select a specific prefix.
  12. Click Next.
  13. If you are creating a time-based reservation, select and expiry date or Unlimited if you do not want the reservation to expire.
  14. If you are creating a vApp-based reservation, select the vApp with which you want to associate the IP reservation.
  15. Click Next.
  16. Review the reservation details, and click Submit.
