Migrating business workloads depends on your organization's business requirements. The operational guidance provided in this section aims to provide the framework for migrating business workloads to an optimal environment which can meet the security, compliance, performance, availability, and financial requirements based on your organization's needs.

Migration Types

Workloads can be migrated bi-directionally between the on-premises VMware Cloud Foundation environment and the VMware Cloud on AWS mobility SDDC using various VMware HCX migration types. See VMware HCX Migration Types.

Extend Networks for Cross Cloud Mobility for VMware Cloud Foundation

To seamlessly migrate to VMware Cloud on AWS, extend networks for your business critical workloads in the on-premises VMware Cloud Foundation environment to the mobility SDDC by using VMware HCX.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the VI workload domain vCenter Server at https://<vi_workload_domain_vcenter_server_fqdn>/ui by using an account with Administrator privileges.
  2. From the vSphere Client Menu, select HCX.

  3. In the left pane, click Services > Network extension

  4. On the Network extension page, click Create a network extension.

  5. On the Extend networks page, select the network you want to extend and click Next.

  6. From the Destination first hop router drop-down menu, select Compute gateway.

  7. In the Source network to extend section, under Gateway IP address / Prefix length, enter the gateway IP address and the subnet length, and click Submit.

  8. Repeat this procedure for each network you want to extend into the mobility SDDC.

Perform HCX Migrations for Cross Cloud Mobility for VMware Cloud Foundation

You can migrate one or more virtual machines at a time using the HCX Migration interface.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the VI workload domain vCenter Server at https://<vi_workload_domain_vcenter_server_fqdn>/ui by using an account with Administrator privileges.
  2. From the vSphere Client Menu, select HCX.
  3. In the left pane, select Services > Migration.
  4. On the Migration page, click Migrate.

  5. On the Workload mobility page, from the vCenter inventory, select the virtual machines you want to migrate by selecting the check box next to each one, and click Add.
  6. Configure transfer and placement.
    1. In the Transfer and placement section, select the compute container, storage, and destination folder, and keep the default setting for the Virtual Disk Format.

    2. (Optional) From the Migration profile drop-down menu, select a migration type.

    3. (Optional) Click Switchover schedule, configure a failover window for the migrations, and click Apply.

  7. In the VM for migration field, expand the virtual machines selected in step 5 and select the destination network for each virtual machine.

Note: In most cases, the previously extended network is selected. You can change this selection as needed to a corresponding network on the mobility SDDC.
  8. Click Validate.

  9. Verify the validation is successful and click Go.
