vSAN provides the storage capacity and storage services to the virtual machines in the initial cluster, and by default in additional clusters. vSAN consumes eight local NVMe devices per ESXi host and is comprised of two disk groups. The customer cloud administrator has read-only view to the configuration of the vSAN datastore.
For additional clusters provisioned within the SDDC, R5 hosts can be selected and a storage capacity per host (15TB - 35TB) can be chosen. For either I3 or R5 hosts, NVMe or EBS storage, vSAN will always be used to present the storage to the cluster and apply the correct storage policies for the virtual machines.
