Customers deploying business-critical Oracle workloads have requirements such as stringent SLAs, continued high performance, and application availability. These stringent business requirements present a major challenge for business organizations to manage data storage in these environments. Common issues in using traditional storage solutions for business-critical applications (BCAs) include inadequate performance, scale-in and scale-out, storage inefficiency, complex management, and high deployment and operating costs.

VMware Cloud on AWS is an on-demand service that enables customers to run applications across cloud environments based on a VMware vSphere platform and to have access to a broad range of AWS services. Powered by VMware Cloud Foundation, this service integrates vSphere, VMware vSAN, and VMware NSX along with VMware vCenter Server management, and it is optimized to run on dedicated, elastic, bare-metal AWS infrastructure. VMware ESXi hosts in VMware Cloud on AWS reside in an AWS Availability Zone (AZ) and are protected by VMware vSphere High Availability.

A new feature called Stretched Clusters for VMware Cloud on AWS is designed to protect against an AWS AZ failure. Now applications can span multiple AWS AZs within a VMware Cloud on AWS cluster.

This solution architecture demonstrated the following:

  • Deployment of a standalone Oracle database in VMware Cloud on AWS
  • Understanding VMware Hybrid Cloud Extension (HCX) and Oracle migration methods to migrate Oracle workloads from on-premise to VMware Cloud on AWS
  • Validate the functionality of on-premises production Oracle RAC and Oracle Far Sync in Site A and Oracle Data Guard Standby RAC in Site B by
    • Switching  online redo log files on the production RAC prdrac
    • Generate and send redo to the Oracle Far Sync prdfs synchronously
    • Oracle Far Sync prdfs in turn sends the redo to the DR Standby RAC prddg asynchronously
  • Migrating standalone Oracle database from on-premises to VMware Cloud on AWS and back
