A VMware Data Services Manager database template is a software blueprint for deploying a specific version of a specific data service. You manage database templates for all Organizations in the VMware Data Services Manager installation: publishing, unpublishing, or retiring them as required.

Publishing a Database Template

When you publish a database template, you make a specific version of a data service available for provisioning.

Prerequisites

Before you publish a database template, ensure that it has the AVAILABLE or UNPUBLISHED Status.

Procedure

Perform the following procedure to publish a Database template:

  1. Select Database Templates from the left navigation pane.

This action displays the Database Templates view.

  2. Examine the database templates listed in the table, identify the database template that you wish to publish, and navigate to that table row.

  3. Click on the Action column value, and select Publish from the pop-up menu.

    The Publish Template dialog displays.

  4. Click CONFIRM to publish the database template.

Note: Publishing a database template may take some time.
  5. Monitor the status of the publish operation:

If the publish action completes successfully, the database template's Status displays PUBLISHED.

Unpublishing a Database Template

When you unpublish a database template, the database template can no longer be used to provision a data service. You may choose to unpublish a database template when a CVE is identified in a specific service version, and you want to prevent provisioning of new databases with the database template.

Unpublishing a database template has no effect on databases that were provisioned using the database template. VMware Data Services Manager continues to process updates for unpublished database templates, and to apply them to running databases.

Prerequisites

A database template must have the PUBLISHED Status to be eligible for unpublishing.

Procedure

Perform the following procedure to unpublish a database template:

  1. Select Database Templates from the left navigation pane.

This action displays the Database Templates view, a table that lists the available database templates.

  2. Examine the database templates listed in the table, identify the database template that you wish to unpublish, and navigate to that table row.

The database template Status must be PUBLISHED.

  3. Click on the Action column, and select Unpublish from the pop-up menu.

    The Unpublish Template dialog displays.

  4. Click CONFIRM to unpublish the database template.

The database template is unpublished and can no longer be used to provision a database.

Retiring a Database Template

When you retire a database template, the database template becomes permanently unavailable, and can no longer be used to provision a data service. You may choose to retire a database template when the version of the service is approaching or has passed end of support, and databases that were provisioned with the database template are no longer relevant (they are unimportant, can be deleted, or there are no databases).

VMware Data Services Manager no longer processes or fetches software updates for database templates that you retire, and no new databases can be provisioned from the database template.

Warning: A Database template that you retire can not be re-published; you can never again use the database template in VMware Data Services Manager.

Prerequisites

Ensure that the database template has the UNPUBLISHED Status.

Procedure

Perform the following procedure to unpublish a database template:

  1. Select Database Templates from the left navigation pane.

This action displays the Database Templates view, a table that lists the available database templates.

  2. Examine the database templates listed in the table, identify the database template that you wish to retire, and navigate to that table row.

The database template Status must be UNPUBLISHED.

  3. Click on the Action column, and select Retire from the pop-up menu.

    The Retire Template dialog displays.

  4. Click CONFIRM to retire the database template.

The retired database template is removed from the table.
