Powering a database Virtual Machine on or off is the equivalent of powering a physical machine on or off.

Powering Off a Database

You may choose to power off a database in your development and testing environent to save costs.

Powering off a database is an on-demand operation. In addition to disrupting connectivity between the database and client applications, the downtime affects currently running management tasks as follows:

  • If an automated task is running when the power down request is made, the task may fail, but will be automatically re-initiated in the next maintenance window if/when the database is powered back on.
  • If the power down operation coincides with other running on-demand tasks, those tasks may also fail, and you may be required to re-initiate them if/when the database is powered back on.

You can clone or delete a powered off database. No other automated or manual management tasks can be performed on a powered off database, and replication to and from the database will cease to work.

Prerequisites

Before you attempt to power off a database, ensure that it is currently powered on.

Procedure

Perform the following procedure to power off a database:

  1. Select Databases from the left navigation pane.

This action displays the Databases view, a table that lists the provisioned databases.

  2. Examine the databases listed in the table, identify the database you wish to power off, and navigate to that table row.

  3. Click the database VM Name.

The database information Details tab displays.

  4. Click the DATABASE ACTIONS button in the top right corner of the view, and select Power Off from the drop-down menu.

    The PowerOff Database dialog displays.

  5. If you are absolutely certain that you want to power off the database, click CONFIRM.

Note: Powering off a database can take some time.
VMware Data Services Manager initiates the power off task, generating an operation of type **POWER_OFF**.
  6. Monitor the progress of the operation in the Operations tab or in the Operations view:

    1. Locate the POWER_OFF operation type and click it.
    2. Select the State History tab to view the subtasks of the operation and their status.
    3. If the operation fails, select the Error Info tab to examine the returned error information.
  7. When the operation completes, the database displays a POWEREDOFF status.

Powering On a Database

You may choose to power a database back on after you power it off. Powering on a database (re)starts it and brings the service online.

VMware Data Services Manager requires no confirmation to power on a database, it initiates the operation immediately.
