After you have provisioned a database, you can update the maintenance window's start time, duration, and the day of the week. You can also activate or deactivate the configuration of automatic software updates during the maintenance window.

Note: Although updates for the the OS components and Engine of a database are shown in the Available Upgrades section of the of the Maintenance tab as soon as available, these updates must be processed only after the the Provider VM and Agent VMs are updated. Also ensure that the control plane is updated before you update the OS components or Engine of a database.

Procedure

To modify the maintenance policy for a database:

  1. Select Databases from the left navigation pane.

    This action displays the Databases view, a table that lists the provisioned databases.

  2. Examine the databases listed in the table, identify the database whose maintenance policy you want to update, and navigate to that table row.

  3. Click the database VM Name.

    The database information Details tab displays.

  4. Select the Maintenance tab.

    This action displays information about the Maintenance Policy of the database, Component Versions of the database, and Available Upgrades for the database.

  5. Click the EDIT button in the *Maintenance Policy section, and set or update the following properties in the Maintenance Policy dialog box, as required:

    Property Name Value
    Auto Minor Version Upgrade Use the slider to select OFF or ON.
    Start Day Use the dropdown menus to select the maintenance window day of the week. This is in the local time zone of the database server.
    Start Time Use the dropdown menus to select the time of day in which to start the maintenance window. This is as per the local time zone of the database server.
    Duration Enter the duration of the maintenance window (minutes).
  6. Click SAVE.

  7. Click the refresh icon on the top right corner of the pane to verify the change in the maintenance policy.

Upgrading the Version of the Database Engine and OS

Upgrades to the core and adapter components of a database do not require any reboot of VMware Data Services Manager. Such upgrades are applied immediately if you have enabled automatic maintenance updates for the database.

Certain upgrades to the OS components of a database that do not require a reboot of VMware Data Services Manager. Such upgrades are applied immediately if you have enabled automatic maintenance updates for the database. However, other upgrades to the OS components of a database and all upgrades to Engine of a database require reboot of VMware Data Services Manager and are applied during the configured maintenance window. Such upgrades are also listed in the Available Upgrades section of the of the Maintenance tab. You can choose to configure such upgrades after they are available without waiting for them to be applied during the configured maintenance window.

Prerequisites

  • If upgrades are available for the Provider VM and Agent VM, upgrade them before you manually upgrade the OS or Engine of the database.

  • All upgrade files for a database are first available with the Provider VM and then updated in the Agent VM. If you choose to upgrade the OS or Engine when the upgrade files are available only with the Provider VM, then the upgrade operation fails.

  • If upgrades are available for the OS and Engine of the database, upgrade the OS followed by the Engine.

Procedure

Perform the following procedure to upgrade OS components and Engine of a database outside the configured maintenance window:

  1. In the Available Upgrades section of the Maintenance tab, identify the OS upgrade that you want to apply, and click Update Now in the corresponding row.

    This action displays the Upgrade Instance dialog that shows the version from which the OS is upgraded from and to what version the OS is upgraded.

  2. Click CONFIRM.

  3. Monitor the operation in the Operations tab below, and after the operation's status is Successs, click the refresh icon at the top right-hand side of the UI.

  4. In the Available Upgrades section of the Maintenance tab, identify the Engine upgrade that you want to apply, and click Update Now in the corresponding row.

    This action displays the Upgrade Instance dialog that shows the version from which the Engine is upgraded from and to what version the OS is upgraded.

  5. Click CONFIRM.
