Troubleshooting your VMware Data Services Manager installation might involve generating a system log bundle on the DSM provider VM.

About System Logs

A system log bundle that you generate from the VMware Data Services Manager console aggregates relevant logs on the DSM provider VM, enabling faster diagnosis when the service faces an issue.

A system log bundle is a gziped tar file, and has the following file name format:

provider_logbundle.<YYYY-MM-DD>-<HHMMSS>.tar.gz

Generating a System Log Bundle

You generate a system log bundle to review activities or to diagnose errors in the VMware Data Services Manager service.

Procedure

  1. Select System Logs from the left navigation pane.

This action displays the System Logs view, a table that lists generated system log bundles.

  2. Click CREATE LOG BUNDLE in the upper right corner of the view to trigger the generation of a log bundle.

A processing icon displays until the bundle is generated.

Results

The newly-generated log bundle is added to the table. You can identify the bundle by its Creation Time.

Downloading a System Log Bundle

You can download a system log bundle to your local host for review and analysis, or to provide to VMware support. The timestamps of downloaded log bundles display time in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

Note: Due to a Chrome limitation, downloading a log bundle using a Chrome browser might fail when the Provider Log Repo is not TLS-secured.

Perform the following procedure to download a service log bundle.

Procedure

  1. Select System Logs from the left navigation pane.
This action displays the System Logs view, a table that lists generated system log bundles.
  2. Examine the bundles listed in the table, and navigate to the bundle to download.
  3. Click the three dots in the Actions column, and select Download.
A browser-specific dialog displays, allowing you to open or to save the log bundle file.
  4. Choose your action for the file to initiate the download.
  5. Note the file system location of the downloaded log bundle file.

Deleting a System Log Bundle

Delete one or more system log bundles when you no longer require the data.

Procedure

  1. Select System Logs from the left navigation pane.
  2. Examine the bundles listed in the table, and select the bundles you want to delete.
    You can select multiple bundles.
  3. Click DELETE LOG BUNDLES in the upper left corner of the view.
The Delete LOG Bundles dialog displays. This confirmation dialog identifies the Bundle Path of each bundle that you selected to delete.
  4. Click CONFIRM.

Results

VMware Data Services Manager deletes the bundles and removes them from the table.
