You can use VMware Dynamic Environment Manager in integration mode, which refers to an integration of VMware Dynamic Environment Manager and Workspace ONE UEM.

VMware Dynamic Environment Manager uses configuration files to manage user and Windows settings and to dynamically configure the desktop. In standalone mode, the configuration files are stored in a VMware Dynamic Environment Manager configuration share. In integration mode, the configuration files are contained in a VMware Dynamic Environment Manager config profile file. After you create a VMware Dynamic Environment Manager config profile file, you use Workspace ONE UEM to distribute the file to Workspace ONE UEM endpoints.

Integration-Mode Workflow

The following process illustrates the full workflow of VMware Dynamic Environment Manager in integration mode. Therefore, after you install or upgrade VMware Dynamic Environment Manager, open the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager Management Console in integration mode and perform the applicable actions.

Attention:
  • If you install VMware Dynamic Environment Manager as a fresh installation, when you open the Management Console the first time, you are prompted to select which mode the Management Console opens in going forward, integration mode or standalone mode.

Whichever mode you select, the Management Console subsequently opens in that mode, unless you change the mode, such as by selecting Configure > Integration in the Management Console.

  • You can also use the command line to open the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager Management Console in a specific mode. The mode you specify only applies to that launch of the Management Console.
    • Specify the -StandaloneMode command line argument to open the Management Console in standalone mode.
    • Specify the -IntegrationMode command-line argument to open the Management Console in integration mode.
    • Similarly, you can pass the name of a .DEMConfig file to open the Management Console in integration mode and automatically open the specified VMware Dynamic Environment Manager config profile file.
  1. Create or edit the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager config profile file in the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager Management Console main menu, an encircled star, the main menu icon, by using the New option to create or the Open option to edit.
  2. Create, edit, or delete the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager configuration files.
  3. If you have not imported a license file, do so now by using the Import License File option in the main menu, an encircled star, the main menu icon.

Without the license file, FlexEngine on endpoint devices does not function.

  4. Save a VMware Dynamic Environment Manager configuration environment to a VMware Dynamic Environment Manager config profile file using the Save or Save As options in the main menu, an encircled star, the main menu icon.
  5. Use the Workspace ONE UEM console to upload the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager config profile file and to target the profile to Workspace ONE UEM smart groups.

This action makes the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager configuration available for distribution to endpoint devices, where FlexEngine picks it up and applies it.

  6. To edit the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager config profile, download the previously uploaded VMware Dynamic Environment Manager config profile file from the Workspace ONE UEM console and take either of the following actions.
    • Open the file in the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager Management Console using the Open option in the main menu, an encircled star, the main menu icon.
    • Double click the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager config profile file to open it in the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager Management Console.

Switching Between VMware Dynamic Environment Manager Modes

You can switch the mode that VMware Dynamic Environment Manager runs in.

When you switch from standalone mode to integration mode, the standalone-mode configuration from the configuration share is available for integration mode. Using the Management Console, you can save this configuration in a VMware Dynamic Environment Manager config profile file.

When you switch from integration mode to standalone mode, the configuration from the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager config profile file is available for standalone mode. You can save this configuration from the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager config profile file to the configuration share.
