Create policies that control the behavior of remote desktop features in Horizon sessions. For more details, see the VMware Horizon documentation.

Horizon Smart Policies for user environment settings are applied during login and can be refreshed during the reconnection of a session. To reapply Horizon Smart Policies when a user reconnects to a session, configure a triggered task.

Procedure

  1. Start the VMware Dynamic Environment Manager Management Console.
  2. Click the User Environment tab.
  3. Select Horizon Smart Policies and click Create.
  4. Enter a name for the settings definition.
  5. Configure the Horizon Smart Policy settings.
    Option Description
Audio playback Specifies whether audio playback is enabled for remote desktops. This setting is to enable audio playback and applies to both PCoIP and Blast Extreme sessions.
Bandwidth profile Configures a bandwidth profile for PCoIP and Blast Extreme sessions on the remote desktop.
    Blast Extreme Protocol
    • Blast codec

Enables the Blast codec, which improves on Adaptive and on H.264 encoders in desktop usage by delivering sharper images and fonts. Disable H.264 on Windows, Linux, and MacOS client settings. The Blast codec is not supported on mobile clients and the Web client.

    • H.264

Specifies whether to use H.264 encoding or JPEG/PNG encoding. The default is to use H.264 encoding.

    • H.264 high color accuracy

Increases color accuracy when using H.264 encoding by using the YUV 4:4:4 colorspace instead of 4:2:0.

This setting might result in degraded performance at very high resolutions or with multiple monitors.

    • H.264 maximum quality

Specifies the minimum quantization value for the best image quality for the remote display configured to use H.264 encoding.

    • H.264 minimum quality

Specifies the maximum quantization value for the lowest image quality for the remote display configured to use H.264 encoding.

    • HEVC/H.265

Enables High Efficiency Video Decoding (HEVC) if the client machine has a GPU that supports HEVC decoding.

    • JPG

When you select Enable for JPG, JPEG encoding is used for encoding in JPEG/PNG mode.

When you select Disable for JPG, PNG encoding is used for encoding in JPEG/PNG mode.

This policy does not apply when the H.264 encoder is active.

    • JPG image quality - Low

Specifies the image quality of the remote display for areas of the screen that change often.

    • JPG image quality - Mid

Specifies the image quality of the remote display.

    • JPG image quality - High

Specifies the image quality of the remote display for areas of the screen that are more static.

    • Max frame rate

Specifies the maximum rate of screen updates. Use this setting to manage the average bandwidth that users consume. The default is 30 updates per second.

    • Max session bandwidth

Specifies the maximum bandwidth, in kilobits per second, for a session.

    • Max session BW megapixel slope

Specifies the maximum bandwidth slope, in kilobits per second, that is reserved for a session.

    • Min session bandwidth

Specifies the minimum bandwidth, in kilobits per second, that is reserved for a session.

    • Switch encoder

Enables switching between a video optimized encoder (H.264 4:2:0 or H.264 4:4:4) and a text optimized encoder (Blast Codec or Adaptive). This switch helps maintain crisp text and video with reduced bandwidth usage.

Drag and drop Enables drag and drop between agent and client.

You can allow drag and drop in both directions or in one direction, from agent to client or from client to agent.

Printing Enables virtual printing on the remote desktop.
    Redirection
    • Browser

Enables or disables the browser content redirection.

Note: This Horizon Smart Policies setting requires version 2306 of Horizon Agent and the corresponding VMware Horizon Browser Redirection extension. The policy only takes effect when VMware browser redirection is enabled on Horizon, using Active Directory Group Policy or Dynamic Environment Manager ADMX-based computer settings. Ensure to install and configure the browser redirection feature. For more information, see Install and Configure Browser Content Redirection in the Horizon Remote Desktop Features and GPOs documentation at VMware Docs.
    • Client drive

Enables the client drive redirection on the remote desktop and whether shared drives and folders are writable.

    • Clipboard

Sets the direction in which clipboard redirection is allowed.

    • FIDO2 web authentication

Enables or disables FIDO2 web authentication redirection on the remote desktop.

    • Storage drive

Enables or disables storage drive redirection on the remote desktop.

    • USB

Enables USB redirection on the remote desktop. Use Horizon Agent 7.6 or later to ensure the best performance of the USB redirection option.

Web and Chrome file transfer Enables and disables file transfer between agent and client.
  6. Click Save.
