You can use the media created to boot your Edge server and create an Edge Compute Stack host.

Caution:

All drives are wiped as part of the automated deployment procedure. You might lose data from the device when you use the media created to boot your Edge server.

Before deploying to a physical server you must ensure the following:

  • Secure Boot is turned off in the server BIOS. For example, on the Intel NUC, press F2 during boot, to go to BIOS settings. Deactivate Secure Boot under the boot menu, and then save, and reboot.

  • A tested and working network cable is plugged into your device, which can receive DHCP addresses and resolve DNS queries to your selected GIT repository and image registries.

Before proceeding to the next step, it is important to know how to boot from a USB drive for the first boot of the device, and not subsequent times. Normally on compute devices, you can go to a one-time boot menu by pressing a key when you initially power-on the compute device.

For example, F10 on an Intel NUC server:

  1. Eject the USB drive created from your development computer in a safe way.

  2. Insert the USB drive into the Edge compute device that you want to use with VMware Edge Compute Stack.

  3. Ensure that your device has a connection to the network by means of an Ethernet cable that provides DHCP and internet access.

  4. Power On your Edge compute device

  5. Press the key to go to the one-time boot menu (F10 in the example of an Intel NUC).

  6. From the boot menu, select to boot from the USB drive.

  7. Your server boots from the USB drive and starts deploying an automated Edge Compute Stack host.
