About VMware HCX

VMware HCX delivers secure and seamless application mobility and infrastructure hybridity across both on-premises and in the cloud. HCX abstracts the distinct private or public vSphere resources and presents a Service Mesh as an end-to-end entity. HCX Interconnect can then provide high-performance, secure, and optimized multi-site connectivity to achieve infrastructure hybridity and present multiple options for bi-directional virtual machine mobility with technologies that facilitate the modernization of legacy data centers.

For more information, see the VMware HCX User Guide in the VMware Documentation Center.

System Requirements and Compatibility

For HCX deployment requirements, see Preparing for HCX Installation.

The following resources provide information related to HCX deployments:

Installation and Upgrade

Installing HCX 4.4.1

For sample installation workflows by deployment type, see Installing the HCX Manager Appliance.

Upgrading to HCX 4.4.1

  • Requirements:
    • Upgrading to HCX 4.4.1 from HCX 4.2 and above is supported.
    • Upgrading to HCX 4.4.1 from other versions requires a full upgrade to 4.3.3 first.
    • All site paired systems must be upgraded.
    • When upgrading to HCX Manager 4.4.1 from a version prior to 4.4.0, you must upgrade all Service Mesh appliances to 4.4.0 or later.
  • Upgrade snapshots :
    • During upgrades to HCX 4.4.1, HCX Manager snapshots are taken automatically.
    • Upgrade snapshots are only taken when an HCX Manager is deployed on the same vCenter Server registered to it. For other deployments, manual snapshots can be taken.
    • HCX retains automatic snapshots for 24 hours before deleting them.
  • VMware sends administrative messages to HCX systems that are running out of support and require upgrade.
  • Upgrade compatibility information is available as a table in VMware Product Interoperability Matrix - Upgrade Path.

For instructions on upgrading HCX Cloud Manager and HCX Connector, see Upgrading the HCX Manager. After updating HCX Cloud Manager and HCX Connector, update the HCX Service Mesh appliances.

What's New

VMware HCX 4.4.1 is a maintenance release that resolves issues reported in the previous release.

Resolved Issues

Resolved Migration Issues

PR/3011874 - When upgrading to HCX 4.4.0, the Mobility Agent service (which is used for vMotion, Cold, and RAV migrations) fails to deploy with the message, "ERROR c.v.v.h.s.i.InterconnectConfigureMA- Configure Mobility Agent job failed."

PR/3010750 - After upgrading to HCX 4.4.0, HCX Interconnect operations (such as Resync, Redeploy, Update Appliance) can hang and become stuck.

PR/3019017 - HCX vMotion and Replication Assisted vMotion migration experience slower than expected performance.

Resolved Management Issues

PR/3010516 - After upgrading to HCX 4.4.0, the Kafka service DB folder was incorrectly set to /tmp/kafka-logs, which might generate system errors or cause HCX services to fail.

PR/3016037 - HCX Interconnect (IX) and Network Extension (NE) appliances can run out of disk space due to a logging issue, and further operations, such as configuration changes, on those appliances can fail.

PR/3021595 - HCX does not retain the Syslog Server configuration setting after upgrading to 4.4.0.

Security Issues

This release includes important security enhancements and updates.

From HCX 4.4.0 onwards, HCX only supports strong ciphers for FTP servers registered to the HCX appliance management service.
