With the VMware Blast display protocol, you can configure USB redirection, Windows Media Player Multimedia Redirection (MMR), and client drive redirection features to send side channel traffic over a Blast Extreme Adaptive Transport (BEAT) connection rather than through the VMware Virtual Channel (VVC) or TCP side channel.

The BEAT side channel enables you to consolidate network port requirements for USB, Windows Media Player MMR, and client drive redirection. If your network allows VMware Blast session traffic, you do not need to open any additional UDP ports because the BEAT side channel shares a single UDP port with core (mouse, keyboard, and display) VMware Blast session traffic. By comparison, the TCP side channel, which does not share the TCP port used for session traffic, requires you to open another TCP port.

Procedure

  1. To active the BEAT side channel for the USB redirection feature, perform these steps.
    1. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMware UsbRedirection and set the sideChannelType key to beat.
    2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware, Inc.\VMware VDM\Agent\Configuration and set the UsbVirtualChannelEnabled key to true.
  2. To active the BEAT side channel for the Windows Media Player Multimedia Redirection (MMR) feature, perform these steps.
