Key Features

VMware Horizon Client for Android makes it easy to access remote desktops and published applications from your Android tablet or phone with the best possible user experience on the Local Area Network (LAN) or across a Wide Area Network (WAN).

  • Work the way you want to - Use your Android tablet or phone to use remote desktops and published applications from any location. Support for the PCoIP display protocol and the VMware Blast display protocol from VMware means that your remote desktop and published application is fast and responsive, regardless of where you are.
  • Best of both worlds - For the mobile device world, Horizon Client supports native Android gestures for quick and easy navigation around a remote desktop or published application. For the Windows world, the full-screen touchpad feature lets you touch anywhere on the screen to move the mouse pointer around the remote desktop or published application. Bridging both worlds, the Unity Touch sidebar makes it easy to browse, search, open, and close Windows applications and files, minimize windows, and switch between running applications, all without using the Windows Start menu or Taskbar.
  • Simple connectivity - Horizon Client for Android is tightly integrated with VMware Horizon 6 and VMware Horizon 7 for simple setup and connectivity. Quickly reconnect to a remote desktop or published application by selecting it from the Recent tab.
  • Unmatched performance - The adaptive capabilities of the PCoIP display protocol and the VMware Blast display protocol mean your remote desktop or published application is fast and responsive regardless of whether you are connecting over your corporate WiFi network or from your 3G, 4G, or LTE connected Android tablet or phone.
  • Secure from any location - At your desk or away from the office, your data is always secure. With RSA soft token integration, you need enter only your RSA PIN into Horizon Client when RSA authentication is required. No need for an RSA hardware token or RSA software token utility. Horizon Client also supports RADIUS authentication.

What's New in This Release

  • Multi-monitor mode enhancements on a Chromebook
    When you use Horizon Client for Android on a Chromebook that has an external monitor, Horizon Client attempts to duplicate the display topology configured on the Chromebook in your remote sessions. Previously, the display topology in a remote session was always horizontally arranged and top aligned.
  • HTTP 307 redirect support
    After an HTTP 307 redirect occurs, Horizon Client for Android now shows the original server URL that the user entered. Previously, the URL of the redirected server appeared in the authentication dialog box.
  • RADIUS authentication login page customization
    Beginning with Horizon 7 version 7.11, an administrator can customize the labels on the RADIUS authentication login page that appears in Horizon Client. For more information, see the topics about two-factor authentication in the VMware Horizon Console Administration document.
  • Set Unauthenticated Access in a JSON file
    When Horizon Client for Android is installed on a Chromebook, you can use the enable_unauthenticated_access property in a JSON file to enable or disable the Unauthenticated Access feature. For more information, see Application Settings.
  • Changes to the derived credentials feature
    To use the derived credentials feature, you must now create a group policy object (GPO) in Active Directory that pairs a virtual smart card with the smart card middleware installed on the remote desktop. You then apply the GPO to the organizational unit (OU) that contains the remote desktop. For more information, see Pair a Virtual Smart Card with Smart Card Middleware.


For Horizon Client for Android, both the user interface and the documentation are available in English, Japanese, French, German, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, and Spanish.

Before You Begin

  • Horizon Client for Android requires the Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or later operating system.
  • Horizon Client for Android is supported with the latest maintenance release of Horizon 6 version 6.2.x and later releases.
  • When you install Horizon Client for Android, you are prompted to let the app read phone status and identity. This prompt relates to the RSA soft token integration feature. The prompt is requesting permission to read the state of the phone. This permission does not allow the app to make a phone call or send a message. You can safely grant this permission.
  • Install and upgrade Horizon Client for Android just as you do any other Android app. For example, you can get the latest version of the app from Google Play or the Amazon Appstore for Android. For a link to the Horizon Client app in one of these stores, go to the Horizon Client Downloads page.

Resolved Issues

  • 1301162: If multiple Horizon clients connect to the same published desktop or published application simultaneously and map to a location-based printer with the same name, the printer appears in the first client session, but not in later client sessions.

  • 1852307: When High Quality Mode is enabled and you run certain published applications (such as Notepad), the icon of the published application does not appear in the Unity Touch sidebar and a default image appears instead. This problem occurs only with Horizon Agent 7.1 and earlier.

  • 2025363: When you start a remote session in Samsung DeX multiple session mode, and a hardware keyboard is not connected, resizing the session window does not change the resolution in the agent if the resolution setting is not a fixed size.

  • 2197419: When Horizon Client for Android is installed on a Chromebook, if you maximize a published application window and then restore it to a small window, the window shows an incomplete display. The title bar of the published application window does not appear.

  • 2292190: When you run Horizon Client for Android on a Chromebook, the remote desktop session does not appear in multi-monitor mode and Horizon Client stops responding.

  • 2351137: When Horizon Client for Android is running on a Chromebook, the Horizon Client window does not display correctly when you restore the window from maximized to small because the previous activity window picture is cached when application windows are maximized.

  • 2443092: On a Chromebook, dual monitors are supported, but the second monitor is always assumed to be to the right. Now, the display topology in the remote session is similar to, but might not be exactly the same as, the display topology that is configured on the Chromebook device.

Known Issues

  • The Unity Touch sidebar cannot show changes in the All Programs menu for new software that you install during that same session.

    Workaround: To see items for new software that you recently installed, disconnect from the desktop and then connect again.

  • The Shift key in the top row of the onscreen keyboard or in the navigation keys is for entering key combinations, such as Ctrl+Shift. If you need to capitalize a letter or type an exclamation point (!) or question mark (?) or other symbol that you create by using the Shift key, use the up arrow as you would in the standard onscreen keyboard.
  • Because an Android device does not have a persistent ID, the device's MAC address is used to generate an ID for the license. If a device's MAC address cannot be detected, its SIM is used instead. If neither the MAC address nor SIM can be detected, a random ID is generated for the device. In certain circumstances, this process can result in multiple licenses being issued to the same device.

    Workaround: An administrator can remove the inactive licenses.

  • On certain Android devices, when you use the client drive redirection feature to copy, rename, or create files on a redirected external SD card, you receive the error You need permission to perform this action. This problem occurs if the Android device prevents third-party apps from getting automatic permission to put files on an external SD card.

    Workaround: None.

  • On some Android devices, certain keys introduce white spaces when you connect to a remote desktop and input text with Horizon Client.

    Workaround: Turn off predictive text for the keyboard in the Android Settings app.

  • If you use an Android 7.0 Nougat device to reconnect to an RDS host that is connected to a per-device license server, Horizon Client generates another client ID after user data is cleared.

    Workaround: None.

  • When you use the VMware Blast display protocol to connect to a remote desktop or published application with a non-English input method, you might not be able to enter certain symbols.

    Workaround: Use the local input buffer, or connect to the remote desktop or published application with the PCoIP display protocol.

  • The Horizon Client smart card feature does not work on an Android 8 or later device because the baiMobile app does not work on Android 8 and later devices. 

    Workaround: None. This problem is a third-party issue.

  • The location-based printing feature does not work well in Horizon Client for Android in an IPv6 network with NAT64.

    Workaround: None.

  • When using seamless window mode on a Chromebook with an external display, moving the application session window between the client display and the external display is difficult.

    Workaround: When moving the session window from the client display to an external display, move your cursor to the top of the window. Keep pressing the left mouse button until only about a quarter of the session window remains on the client display. After you release the mouse button, the session window moves to the external display. Follow the same procedure to move the session window from an external display to the client display.

  • Some Horizon Client settings are not saved for multiple sessions. For example, if you deselect the Local storage redirection > Enable auto redirect for mounted storage option, the option is selected after you disconnect and then reconnect to a remote desktop session. This issue occurs when you install Horizon Client for Android on a Chromebook or on an Android device in DeX desktop mode.

    Workaround: None.

  • When you connect to a remote desktop with the High Quality Mode option enabled, if you change the resolution from the Auto-fit resolution option to another resolution in the Horizon Client settings, and then change the resolution back to the Auto-fit resolution option, Horizon Client uses the wrong resolution.

    Workaround: Log off and reconnect to the remote desktop.

  • When Horizon Client for Android is running on a Chromebook, if you use a virtual smart card (derived credentials) to authenticate, the certificate becomes invalid after you log in again or restart the operating system.

    Workaround: Uninstall the certificate, reinstall the certificate, and create a virtual smart card that uses the new certificate.

  • When Horizon Client for Android is installed on a Chromebook and you are using a NAT64 network, Horizon Client for Android cannot resolve an IPv4 literal address when you try to connect to a server in an IPv6 environment.

    Workaround: Use a fully qualified domain name when you connect to the server.

  • If you use a NAT64 network that is shared from a macOS 10.14 or later system, internet access is not available on an Android device and Horizon Client for Android cannot connect to a server.

    Workaround: Use an earlier macOS version to share the NAT64 network, for example, use macOS version 10.11.6.

  • On an Android 10 (Q) device, you cannot copy and paste text from the client device to a remote desktop or published application.

    Workaround: None.

  • On an Android 10 (Q) device, gesture navigation is enabled by default. This feature conflicts with the Unity Touch feature in some cases. When a conflict occurs, you might not be able to open the Unity Touch sidebar by sliding from the left edge. 

    Workaround: Use the floating handle to open the Unity Touch sidebar.
