You can use Horizon Client with external displays and you can change screen resolutions.

When you connect a client device to an external display or projector, Horizon Client supports certain maximum display resolutions. You can change the screen resolution that the client device uses to allow scrolling a larger screen resolution.

Enlarging the Screen Resolution for a Remote Desktop

By default, the display resolution is set so that the entire remote desktop fits inside the client device, and the remote desktop icons and task bar icons are a certain size. If you use a larger resolution, the remote desktop still fits inside the client device, but the remote desktop and taskbar icons become smaller.

You can pinch your fingers apart to zoom in and make the remote desktop larger than the device screen. You can then tap and drag to access the edges of the remote desktop.

Changing the Display Resolution Setting

To change the resolution from a remote desktop or published application, tap to expand the Horizon Client Tools radial menu icon, tap the Settings (gear) icon, and tap Resolution. You can also change the resolution from the Horizon Client Settings window. Tap Settings at the bottom of the Horizon Client window and tap Resolution.

Note: Certain options, including 3/4 Scaling and No Scaling, are not available on iPhone 6 when the device is in zoomed mode. To display these options, you must exit zoomed mode.

Using High Resolution Mode

You can use the High Resolution Mode feature to obtain the best display quality in remote desktops and published applications.

To activate High Resolution Mode from the Horizon Client Settings window, tap Settings at the bottom of the Horizon Client window, tap Resolution, and tap to toggle the High Resolution Mode setting to on. To activate High Resolution Mode from a remote desktop or published application, tap to expand the Horizon Client Tools radial menu icon, tap the Settings (gear) icon, tap Resolution, and tap to toggle the High Resolution Mode setting to on.

The High Resolution Mode feature has the following requirements and limitations.

  • For end users - The remote desktop or published application must support the High Resolution Mode feature.
  • You cannot use the High Resolution Mode feature for existing sessions. You must log out and log in to a new session for the feature to take effect.
  • You must have an iPad Pro, or an iPad or iPad mini with Retina display, to use the High Resolution Mode feature.
  • The High Resolution Mode feature can consume significant bandwidth. To optimize for bandwidth, set the High Resolution Mode setting to off.

High Resolution Mode is activated by default.

Using External Monitors and Projectors

Use the External Display setting to configure settings for external displays, such as projectors and attached monitors. You can select these modes for the External Display setting.
Option Description
Presentation

When you activate this setting, a keyboard and expanded onscreen touchpad appear on the device when you display a remote desktop on an external display. The expanded touchpad and keyboard appear when you plug the device into the external display. The device detects the maximum resolution provided by the external display.

You can use a physical mouse on the external display.

You can use a shortcut to switch to other display modes. If you click Switch Display Modes in the upper-middle of the virtual touchpad on an iPad, a dialog box appears and you can switch to another display mode.

Mirror

When you activate this setting, a remote desktop appears on an external display based on the external display’s resolution. The device shows a mirror of the external display with the same aspect ratio.

You cannot change the orientation and full-screen mode on the external display, but you can change the orientation on the device display.

If you use touch, a pen, or a mouse on the device screen, the input is mapped to the external display.

The menu, Unity Touch sidebar, and keyboard bar of Horizon Client appear only on the device screen.

This setting is supported only on an iPad. iPhone does not support this mode. iPhone users cannot see this option.

Extended (Multi-monitor mode) Activate this setting to extend your display to an external monitor.

You can mirror the entire device display on a projector or attached monitor, including the Unity Touch sidebar, by turning off the Presentation setting. If you are connected to a remote desktop and the Presentation setting is activated, you can click Done to turn off the external display modes in Horizon and use the default behavior of iOS.

You can configure these settings from a remote desktop or published application by tapping to expand the Horizon Client Tools radial menu icon and tapping the Settings (gear) icon. You can also configure these settings by tapping the Settings (gear) icon at the bottom of the Horizon Client window.

Hiding Sensitive Information on External Displays

When you use Horizon Client with an external monitor or projector, sensitive information, such as passwords and passcodes, is hidden to protect user data security.

Configure Multi-Monitor Mode on the iPad

You can customize the display topology using Horizon Client settings so that the external monitor serves as an extended display for an iPad.

Note: Please review the following before performing this task:
  • This feature is supported on iPad only.
  • This feature only supports one external display.
  • Supported on all operating systems starting with iOS 14 and later.
  • Supports both PCoIP and Blast with or without H264.
  • Supports four display arrangements (external display is located at right, left, top and bottom relative to iPad). The default arrangement is with the external display at the right.
  • If you do not have a physical mouse under multi-monitor mode, you can switch to "virtual touchpad" (either in fullscreen or non-fullscreen mode) to control the mouse pointer.
  • When multi-monitor mode is enabled, you can only use the floating toolbar and unity touch side bar using your finger, not the mouse (the host mouse cursor is locked).
  1. On the iPad, select Settings > External Display >Extended.

Note that the setting "External Display" is only visible when there is an external display connected.

  2. Select Arrange Display.
A new pane displays with two sections:
    1. In the first section, select the primary display.
    2. In the second section, specify the display arrangement (right-left-top-bottom) by tapping on the corresponding images. The default display topology is a left-right arrangement, which means the external screen will be located to the right of the device view.

Note: The device view is always located at the center of the panel view.

  3. Click Done to save this arrangement to user defaults. When this view displays again, the layout is used and the settings applied to the remote desktop. Click Back to cancel the changes.
Note: When a user connects a different monitor to this iPad or the device has been rotated, the user preference will still take effect but the preview is updated accordingly (the frame of the external screen changes).

When external display modes are not valid, the display arrangement view is dismissed, and the "External Display" setting is not available.
