To support Windows Media Multimedia Redirection (MMR), your VMware Horizon deployment must meet certain software and hardware requirements.

Remote desktop
  • This feature is supported on virtual desktops and RDS hosts for published desktops.
  • The following guest operating systems are supported.
    • Windows 10 or Windows 11. Windows Media Player is supported. The default player TV & Movies is not supported.
    • Windows Server configured as an RDS host
  • 3D Rendering can be activated or deactivated on the desktop pool.
  • Users must play videos on Windows Media Player 12 or later or in Internet Explorer 8 or later.
Horizon Client software
Horizon Client for Windows.
Horizon Client computer or client access device
The clients must run a 64-bit or 32-bit Windows 10 operating system or newer.
Note: Starting with Windows 11, you will need to manually install the Windows Media Player Legacy component as it is no longer installed by default.
Supported media formats
Media formats that Windows Media Player supports, for example: M4V; MOV; MP4; WMP; MPEG-4 Part 2; WMV 7, 8, and 9; WMA; AVI; ACE; MP3; WAV.
MP3 is not supported when using MMS and RTSP.
Note: DRM-protected content is not redirected through Windows Media MMR.
Horizon policies
In the console, set the Multimedia redirection (MMR) policy to Allow. The default value is Deny.
Back-end firewall
If your VMware Horizon deployment includes a back-end firewall, verify that the firewall allows traffic to port 9427 on your desktops.
