Before you create protection groups, you must configure replication on the virtual machines to protect.
You can replicate virtual machines by using array-based replication, vSphere Replication, Virtual Volumes replication, or a combination of all three types.
When you configure replication, you set a recovery point objective (RPO) to determine the maximum data loss that you can tolerate. VMware Live Site Recovery with vSphere Replication now supports RPO as low as 1 minute when using enhanced replication. The RPO value for array-based replication and Virtual Volumes replication depends on the Storage Replication Adapters (SRA) provided by the vendors.
