Migration Process Workflow
During the migration process, the NSX Migration for VMware Cloud Director tool performs the following operations.
Note In this section, the source defines the NSX Data Center for vSphere and the target defines the NSX-T Data Center.
The following table describes the steps for breakpoints:
| Breakpoint |
Steps |
| topology |
1-22, 38-49, 51, 79 |
| bridging |
32-37, 52-60 |
| services |
23-24, 50, 61-74 |

- Fetch the metadata from the source organization VDC.
- Verify that the target organization VDC exists.
- Verify that the target external network is supported.
- Validate the source network pool backing.
- Verify that the source organization VDC is backed by NSX Data Center for vSphere.
- Verify that the hardware version of the source provider VDC is compatible with the target provider VDC.

- Disable the source organization VDC.
- Verify that the placement policies are available for the source organization VDC in the target organization VDC.
- Verify that the source organization VDC and target organization VDC is associated with the storage profiles.
- Verify that the source organization VDC storage profiles are available and enabled in the target provider VDC.
- Validate the edge cluster for target edge gateway deployment.
- Verify that the source and target external networks are using the same subnets.
- Validate whether Overlapping Org VDC network subnets exist in case of edge gateways mapped to IP Space enabled Provider Gateway.
- Verify that all the edge gateway interfaces are not in use.
- Verify if other gateways are using the dedicated external network.
- Validate whether conflicts exist between Org VDC network subnets and existing IP Space internal scopes available to the tenant in case of edge gateway mapped to IP Space enabled provider gateway.
- Validate whether the shared networks are supported or not.
- Verify the direct network prerequisites are met in the source organization VDC.
- Verify whether the source NSX-V Segment ID Pool is a subset of the target NSX-T VNI Pool or not.
- Validate Target NSX-T backed Network Pools.
- Verify Cross VDC networking is not enabled.
- Verify the distributed firewall configuration in the source organization VDC.
- Verify the edge gateway services in the source organization VDC are supported in the target organization VDC.
- Check whether empty vApps or vApps in failed creation/unresolved/unrecognized/inconsistent state exist in source org VDC.
- In the source organization VDC, verify that the VMs are not in the suspended/partially suspended states or in maintenance mode in the vApps.
- Verify if fencing is enabled on the vApps in the source organization VDC.
- Verify whether an unsupported routed vApp network configuration is present.
- Verify that Independent Disks in Org VDC are not shared.
- Verify that no media is connected to any VMs in the vApp.
- Disable the affinity rules for the source organization VDC.
- Verify that the bridge uplink profile (host switch profile) is available in the NSX-T Data Center.
- Verify that the source organization VDC networks (Routed and Isolated) count is greater than the number of edge transport nodes participating in bridging.
- Validate that the edge transport nodes are accessible via SSH.
- Verify whether the edge transport nodes are deployed on NSX-V prepared cluster.
- Verify the number of isolated/routed org VDC networks is less than the max limit of bridge endpoint profiles in NSX-T Data Center.
- Verify that the edge transport nodes used for bridging are in use. Tag the edge transport nodes when sufficient free nodes are available.
- Verify the number of Org VDC/s to be migrated is less/equal to 16.
- Verify if any Org VDC is using a shared network other than those mentioned in the input file.
- Verify if the respective owners of shared networks are also part of the migration.
- Validating distributed firewall default rule in all Org VDCs is the same.
- Create the organization VDC in the NSX-T Data Center.
- Apply the VM placement policy to the target organization VDC.
- Apply the VM sizing policy to the target organization VDC.
- Create the ACL for the target organization VDC.
- Create the edge gateway for the target organization VDC.
- Create private IP spaces for routed Org VDC network subnets in case the edge gateway is mapped to an IP Space enabled provider gateway.
- Create the organization VDC network in the target organization VDC. Creation of logical segments if dedicated direct networks exist in NSX Data Center for vSphere backed organization VDC.
- Disconnect the organization VDC networks from the edge gateway of the NSX-T Data Center.
- Create data center groups for DFW and shared networks.
- Create data center groups for direct/imported networks.
- Enable promiscuous mode and forged transmit on the source organization VDC networks.
- Migration of User-defined metadata to NSX-T backed organization VDC.
- Create Bridge Transport Zone.

- Add the bridge transport zone and uplink profile to edge transport nodes.
- Attach the bridge endpoint profile to the target organization VDC networks.
- Get the edge gateway MAC address for the source organization VDC routed networks.
- Log in to the NSX-T Data Center edge transport nodes to validate the bridge connectivity. Edge gateway interface MAC address visibility test is performed.
- Allocate the IPs from floating IP ranges of public IP spaces to the tenant in case of edge gateway mapped IP space enabled provider gateway. These IPs were used by the NSX-V edge gateway for numerous services.
