For L2VPN discovery, the MPLS Topology Server component of MPLS Manager is able to discover and model the following MPLS Layer 2 VPN entities:

  • LDP-signaled L2VPNs

This L2VPN uses Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) signaling to set up and maintain the pseudowires between PE devices in an MPLS network.

  • BGP-signaled L2VPNs

This L2VPN uses Multiprotocol Border Gateway Protocol (MBGP) signaling to set up and maintain the pseudowires between PE devices in an MPLS network.

  • VPWS

Virtual private wire service, also known as point-to-point L2VPN, is a technology that uses a pseudowire to emulate a point-to-point circuit across an MPLS network.

  • VPLS

Virtual private LAN service, also known as point-to-multipoint L2VPN, is a technology that uses a full mesh of pseudowires to emulate a LAN across an MPLS network.

The MPLS Topology Server requires a Level 2 VPN feature license for the discovery of VPWS and VPLS L2VPNs. The VMware Smart Assurance System Administration Guide provides information about licensing.
