As shown in Discovery methods for Avaya, Cisco, and Nortel devices, VoIP Availability Manager supports SNMP Management Information Base (MIB) discovery, Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), and Command Line Interface (CLI) discovery.

Table 1. Discovery methods for Avaya, Cisco, and Nortel devices

Avaya discovery method

Cisco discovery method

Nortel discovery method

MIB discovery

After it completes its MIB discovery, the Avaya Enablement Pack uses SNMP polling results and received SNMP traps to update the status of the discovered topology.

MIB discovery and SOAP discovery

After it completes its discovery, the Cisco Enablement Pack uses SNMP and SOAP polling results and SNMP traps to update the status of the discovered topology.

MIB and CLI discovery

After it completes its MIB and CLI discovery, the Nortel Enablement Pack uses received SNMP traps to update the status of the discovered topology.

For discovery, VoIP Availability Manager supports the following SNMP protocol versions as long as they are supported by the SNMP agent of the candidate system: V1, V2C, and V3.

The VMware Smart Assurance VoIP Availability Manager Configuration Guide describes SNMP trap processing that is used for monitoring.
