Data Center Migration

Generate Migration Recommendations

The VMware Tanzu CloudHealth can help you plan the migration of one or more data center or VMware accounts to AWS, Azure or GCP. Tanzu CloudHealth generates migration recommendations based on the utilization or configuration of servers in your data center or VMware environment.

Step 1: Configure Migration Parameters

Specify which data center or VMware accounts to consider for migration assessment. Filter the account list by server name, tag, or Perspective. Specify advanced options for the assessment.

  1. Navigate to the left menu, select Recommendations > Migration Assessment.
  2. Select the parameters for the assessment.
    • Migrate From: Select whether to migrate from VMware or Data Center and then select which accounts to migrate from.
    • Filtered By: Reduce list of accounts by server name, tag, or Perspective Group. Add filters for more specificity.
    • Migrate To: Select AWS, Azure, or GCP as the destination cloud provider for the assessment. Add multiple cloud providers to receive more recommendations. The Platform does not support identical tag key names. If you filter by an identical VMware or Data Center tag key name, the Migration Assessment only filters by the last key value pair. Tanzu CloudHealth therefore does not recommend filtering by an identical tag key name.
  3. In the Advanced Options section, specify the basis for the assessment using the Recommend Based On field.
    • Configuration: Tanzu CloudHealth formulates recommendations based on server configuration, without considering utilization.
    • Utilization: Tanzu CloudHealth formulates recommendations based on server utilization. With this option, you can specify additional parameters: Average and Maximum CPU, Disk, or Memory metrics to use; Data Range for analysis; CPU, Memory, and Disk Headroom.
  4. In the Cloud Options section, select the cloud-specific configurations.
    • AWS Options: Select whether to allow purchases of reserved instances and to use AWS burstable performance instances when calculating Data Center recommendations.
    • Azure Options: Select whether to allow purchases of reservations, to use Azure dev or test VMs, and to use Enterprise Agreement (EA) pricing when calculating Data Center recommendations.
    • GCP Options: Select whether to use Committed Use discounts when calculating Data Center migration costs.
  5. Click Run Assessment.

Step 2: Review Recommendations

Recommendations are organized by data center. Each line item corresponds to one server in the data center or VMware. It contains the following information:

  • CPU, Memory, and Disk configuration of the server.
  • Cost of the configuration based on server pricing you specified in the Tanzu CloudHealth platform.
  • Recommended instance to migrate the server to in AWS, including instance type, instance configuration, on-demand cost, and reservation cost.
  • Recommended VM to migrate the server to in Azure, including VM type, VM configuration, and Azure cost.
  • Recommended type to migrate the server to in GCP, including storage and on demand costs.

Step 3: Act on Recommendations

Use one of these options:

  • Save the list of recommendations.
  • Export recommendations as CSV.
