This topic tells you about the runtime environments that you can install on VMware Tanzu Operations Manager: VMware Tanzu Application Service for VMs (TAS for VMs) and VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Integrated Edition (TKGI).

Tanzu Operations Manager includes runtime environment options that support apps and containers running on Linux and Windows VMs at different levels of resource usage and isolation. You install your chosen runtime or runtimes using the Tanzu Operations Manager Installation Dashboard.

Tanzu Operations Manager includes support for the following primary runtime environments:

  • [TAS for VMs)]

  • [TKGI)]

TAS for VMs

TAS for VMs lets developers develop and manage cloud-native apps and software services running on Linux. TAS for VMs is based on the open-source Cloud Foundry Application Runtime project.

To install and configure TAS for VMs, see the TAS for VMs documentation.

As an alternative to TAS for VMs, you can install [VMware Tanzu Application Service for VMs [Small Footprint] (TAS for VMs [Small Footprint]) to deploy your app using fewer resources.

For more information, see TAS for VMs [Small Footprint].

After you install the TAS for VMs runtime tile, you can also install the following runtime tiles that extend the functionality of TAS for VMs:

  • [VMware Tanzu Application Service for VMs [Windows] (TAS for VMs [Windows])]

  • [Isolation Segment]

TAS for VMs [Small Footprint]

TAS for VMs [Small Footprint] is an alternative to TAS for VMs that uses significantly fewer VMs than TAS for VMs, but limits system capacity and availability.

For more information about TAS for VMs [Small Footprint], see the TAS for VMs documentation.

TAS for VMs [Windows]

VMware Tanzu Application Service for VMs [Windows] (TAS for VMs [Windows]) lets Tanzu Operations Manager host apps on Windows VMs and enables Tanzu Operations Manager developers to push .NET apps to these Windows Diego Cells. You must install TAS for VMs before you can install TAS for VMs [Windows].

For more information about TAS for VMs [Windows], see the TAS for VMs [Windows] documentation.

Isolation Segment

Isolation Segment extends TAS for VMs to run apps in separate segments with their own isolated computing, routing, and logging resource pools. Operators replicate and configure an Isolation Segment tile for each new resource pool they want to create. You must install TAS for VMs before you can install Isolation Segment.

To install Isolation Segment, see the TAS for VMs documentation.

TKGI

TKGI lets operators provision, operate, and manage enterprise-grade Kubernetes clusters on Tanzu Operations Manager. TKGI is based on the open-source Cloud Foundry Container Runtime project.

To install and configure TKGI, see the TKGI documentation.
