From version 2.0, VMware Telco Cloud Automation has automated the upgrade validations. The VMware Telco Cloud Automation performs the following validations when upgrading Kubernetes clusters to a newer version.
Pre-upgrade Validations for Management Cluster
When upgrading the Management cluster, VMware Telco Cloud Automation performs the following validations:
Whether the cluster is reachable.
Whether the Control Plane and Worker nodes are in a healthy state and fail the upgrade if they are in the Not Ready state.
Whether key deployment parameters such as names of the folders and network paths are not renamed or moved.
Whether the operators are running and display a warning if they are not.
Post-upgrade Validations for Management Cluster
After you upgrade a Management cluster:
Only the Management cluster add-ons are upgraded.
The Management cluster upgrade is successful even when the underlying workload clusters are down.
If the operators are not the latest versions, the corresponding workload clusters display a warning for upgrading the add-ons. To upgrade Workload cluster add-ons individually, use the Upgrade Add-Ons option.
Pre-upgrade Validations for Workload Cluster
When upgrading the Workload cluster, VMware Telco Cloud Automation performs the following validations:
Whether the cluster is reachable.
Whether the control planes are in a healthy state and fail the upgrade if they are in the Not Ready state.
Whether the worker nodes are in a healthy state and show a warning if they are in the Not Ready state.
Whether key deployment parameters such as names of the folders and network paths are not renamed or moved.
Whether the operators are running and display a warning if they are not.
Whether the Management cluster is reachable and at least one Worker node is in the Ready state.
Whether the
vmconfig-operator
on the Management cluster is running. Cluster upgrade fails ifvmconfig-operator
is not running.
Post-upgrade Validations for Workload Cluster
If any cell site is down during an upgrade, the VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid CLI times out after upgrading the control plane nodes and healthy worker nodes. At this point, you can still perform life-cycle management operations.
After the VMware ESXi connects, VMware Telco Cloud Automation upgrades the failed nodes.
After you remediate any environment issue, click Retry for completing the upgrade.
