VMware Telco Cloud Platform RAN 2.2 | 19 JAN 2023

Check for additions and updates to these release notes.

What's New

VMware Telco Cloud Platform - RAN™ Release 2.2 includes key features and enhancements across the carrier-grade RAN stack including VMware vSphere, VMware Tanzu Basic for RAN, VMware Telco Cloud Service Assurance™ for RAN, and VMware Telco Cloud Automation to improve performance, operability and scale, and user experience.

Workload Compute

VMware ESXi 7.0 Update 3g includes various resolved issues. For more information, see the VMware ESXi 7.0 Update 3g Release Notes.

Carrier-Grade VNF and CNF Automation and Orchestration

VMware Telco Cloud Automation 2.2 introduces various new features and enhancements. Some of the key features and enhancements are as follows:

  • PTP Status Notification through Cloud API: Provides an automation framework for delivering O-RAN compliant Precision Time Protocol (PTP) status notifications that are critical to vDU. This framework supports PTP Sync Status and PTP Lock Status notifications. It monitors PTP state change and transfers the status notification to the vDU.

  • Automation of Silicom STS NIC and LLS-C1 configuration consists of the following:

    • Automation of PTP over VF (SR-IOV) for Silicom STS Cards

    • Automation of SyncE Support for Silicom STS Cards

    • Automation of USB passthrough to VM

  • Dual Tanzu Kuberbetes Management Cluster Support

  • CaaS Cluster Node Autoscale

For more information about these features and enhancements, see the VMware Telco Cloud Automation 2.2 Release Notes.

Carrier-Grade Kubernetes Infrastructure

VMware Tanzu Basic for RAN introduces various features and enhancements as part of VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid 1.6.1. Some of the key features are as follows:

  • Support for Kubernetes versions:

    • 1.23.10

    • 1.22.13

    • 1.21.14

  • Security Bug Fixes: Several security vulnerabilities are addressed.

For more information about these features and enhancements, see the VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid 1.6.1 Release Notes.

Operations Management

As part of VMware Telco Cloud Service Assurance 2.1, VMware Telco Cloud Service Assurance for RAN provides Closed Loop Remediation for infrastructure failure across the Telco Cloud Platform RAN stack. It adds pipeline monitoring to the stack and also provides DU, RU, and the entire Cell Site monitoring.

For more information about this feature, see the VMware Telco Cloud Service Assurance 2.1 Release Notes.

Support for Backward Compatibility of CaaS Layer with IaaS Layer

VMware Telco Cloud Platform RAN 2.2 supports backward compatibility of its CaaS layer components (Telco Cloud Automation and Tanzu Kubernetes Grid) with the IaaS Layer component (vSphere) in earlier versions of Telco Cloud Platform for RAN. With this feature, you can upgrade the CaaS layer components to their latest versions while using earlier versions of the IaaS layer component.

For more information, see Software Version Support and Interoperability in the Telco Cloud Automation Deployment Guide and Supported Features on Different VIM Types in the Telco Cloud Automation User Guide.

Resolved Issues

Note: For information about the entire list of fixes delivered in each Telco Cloud Platform RAN component, see the corresponding product release notes.

  • Kernel Panic Occurs in the Systems Running Photon Kernel 4.19.198 Series

Due to a bug in the upstream Linux Kernel, Kernel panic occurs in the systems that run Photon Intel 4.19.198 series.

This issue is fixed in Photon linux-rt-4.19.198-14 or later versions.

  • VM Hangs Due to a Bug in Intel Driver

Due to a bug in the Intel driver, the VM hangs. This bug resets IRQ affinities on the CPU cores of the VM and spreads the interrupt process across the cores, thereby impacting the processing time of real-time threads.

Through VMware patches, this issue is fixed in the Intel ice and iavf drivers in Photon linux-rt-4.19.198-18 or later versions of 198-kernel series and in linux-rt-4.19.264-6 or later versions of mainline Photon kernel series.

Known Issues

Note: For information about the entire list of known issues in each Telco Cloud Platform RAN component, see the corresponding product release notes.

  • Driver Sub-Packages From Previous Photon Kernel Version Not Deleted Automatically When Instantiating a CSAR with New Photon Kernel Version

When you instantiate a new CSAR with a Photon kernel version 4.19.198-18 or later, driver sub-packages installed from the previous kernel version are not deleted automatically. This leads to an error during the network function instantiation in Telco Cloud Automation.

Workaround: Before instantiating the CSAR with the new Photon kernel version, remove the driver sub-packages of the previous kernel version manually. For instructions, see KB90345.
