Create two dedicated vSphere Distributed Switches for infrastructure and tenant networks on the Edge cluster.
Procedure
- Create a vSphere distributed switch named TCP_EDGE_INFRA_VDS to use as the infrastructure vSphere Distributed Switch.
Note:
Ensure that the Jumbo frame value is set to 9000.
- Add two uplink ports to the infrastructure vSphere Distributed Switch.
- Add hosts ESXi_EDGE_01 through ESXi_EDGE_03 to the distributed switch by connecting two physical NICs from each host to the switch.
- Connect two physical Ethernet ports from each ESXi host to the uplink ports on the distributed switch
- Configure VMkernel networking.
- Create the following port groups on the distributed switch:
Port Group |
VLAN ID |
ESXi Management |
100 |
vMotion Network |
200 |
vSAN Network |
300 |
- Migrate the management VMkernel adapter of each host to the ESXi Management port group.
- Create VMkernel adapters on each host for the remaining infrastructure traffic types.
Set the traffic type of each adapter to an infrastructure traffic type, for example, vMotion traffic and vSAN traffic.
Associate each adapter with a dedicated port group. For example, associate the vMotion adapter with the vMotion port group.
- Create a distributed switch named TCP_EDGE_TENANT_VDS to use as the tenant vSphere Distributed Switch.
- Add two uplinks to the tenant vSphere Distributed Switch.
- Add ESXi hosts ESXi_EDGE_01 through ESXi_EDGE_03 to the distributed switch.
- Connect the remaining two physical Ethernet ports from each ESXi host to the uplinks on the distributed switch.
Note:
Each Ethernet port must be from a different controller on the ESXi hosts.
- Configure VM networking by creating following port groups on the distributed switch:
Port Group |
VLAN ID |
Management Network |
400 |
Overlay Network |
None |
External Network |
Trunk (0-4094) |
What to do next
After configuring the vSphere distributed switches in the edge cluster, verify the following:
Two distributed switches are visible in each ESXi host in the edge cluster.
Ethernet ports of the ESXi hosts are connected to uplink ports on the distributed switch.
