Both password authentication and public-key authentication require configuration at both the SSH client and the SSH server. Depending or who is authorized to do what, you, as the MPLS Manager administrator, might need to contact the system administrator of the network devices in the managed network to complete some of these tasks.

Configuring a network device to use SSH requires the completion of the following basic tasks for each network device that is to be SSH enabled:

  • Enable the SSH transport support for the virtual-terminal connections.

  • Generate a public/private key pair.

The public key of the generated public/private key pair is referred to as the “public host key” or just “host key.”

The procedure to configure the SSH server on a network device depends on the make and model of the device. Consult the device’s user documentation to complete the procedure.
