An OSPF virtual interface is a virtual interface, associated with an underlying IP interface, that participates in the OSPF protocol exchange. A virtual interface is associated with a virtual link, which is typically used to link an OSPF area that does not have a physical connection to the backbone area (Area 0). The virtual link is established between two ABRs that have a common OSPF area, and the one ABR is connected to the backbone area.
