Create and configure the vSphere cluster.

This process consists of the following actions:

  • Enable vSphere DRS.

  • Enable Enhanced vMotion Compatibility.

  • Add the hosts to the cluster.

  • Add a host to the active directory domain.

  • Rename the vSAN datastore.

  • Create, configure, and populate resource pools.

Procedure

  1. Log in to vCenter Server by using the vSphere Web Client.
    1. Open a Web browser and go to https://nyc01r01vc01.rainpole.local/vsphere-client.
    2. Log in using the following credentials.

  2. Enable vSphere DRS.
    1. Expand the nyc01-r01dc data center object.
    2. Click the nyc01-r01-robo01 cluster object then click the Configure tab.
    3. Select the vSphere DRS under Services , and click Edit.
    4. Select the Turn On vSphere DRS check box then click OK.
  3. Enable VMware EVC.
    1. Under the Configuration page, select the VMware EVC and click Edit.
    2. Set EVC mode to the highest available baseline that is supported for the lowest CPU architecture on the hosts in the cluster and click OK.
  4. Add additional hosts to the cluster.
    1. Right-click the nyc01-r01-robo01 cluster, and click Add Host.
    2. On the Name and location page, enter nyc01r01esx02.rainpole.local in the Host name or IP address text box and click Next.
    3. On the Connection settings page, enter the following credentials and click Next.

    4. In the Security Alert dialog box, click Yes.
    5. On the Host summary page, review the host information and click Next.
    6. On the Assign license page, select the ESXi license key that you entered during the vCenter Server deployment and click Next.
    7. On the Lockdown mode page, click Next.
    8. On the Resource pool page, click Next.
    9. On the Ready to complete page, review your entries and click Finish.
  5. Repeat the previous step for the remaining hosts to add them to the cluster.

  6. Add an ESXi host to the Active Directory domain
    1. In the Navigator, click Hosts and Clusters and expand the entire nyc01r01vc01.rainpole.local tree.
    2. Select the nyc01r01esx01.rainpole.local host.
    3. Click the Configure tab.
    4. Under System, select Authentication Services.
    5. In the Authentication Services panel, click the Join Domain button.
    6. In the Join Domain dialog box, enter the following settings and click OK.

  7. Set the Active Directory Service to Start and stop with host.
    1. In the Navigator, click Hosts and Clusters and expand the entire nyc01r01vc01.rainpole.local tree.
    2. Select the nyc01r01esx01.rainpole.local host.
    3. Click the Configure tab.
    4. Under System, select Security Profile.
    5. Click the Edit button next to Services.
    6. Select the Active Directory Service, change the Startup Policy to Start and stop with host, and click OK.
  8. Rename the vSAN datastore.
    1. In the Navigator, click Storage and expand the entire nyc01r01vc01.rainpole.local tree.
    2. Select vsanDatastore, and select Actions > Rename.
    3. In the Datastore - Rename dialog box, enter nyc01-r01-vsan01 as the datastore name, and click OK.
  9. Configure resource pools for the cluster.
    1. Right-click the nyc01-r01-robo01 cluster and select New Resource Pool.
    2. In the New Resource Pool dialog box, enter the following values and click OK.
    3. Repeat for each of the resource pools needed.

  10. Move vCenter Server to the nyc01-sddc-mgmt resource pool.
    1. In the Navigator, click Hosts and Clusters and expand the entire nyc01r01vc01.rainpole.local tree.
    2. Select nyc01r01vc01 and drag it to the nyc01-sddc-mgmt resource pool.
