After you complete the upgrade of the Platform Services Controller and vCenter Server instances for the shared edge and compute cluster, you use vSphere Update Manager for automated upgrade of the ESXi hosts in Region A and Region B.

Procedure

  1. In a Web browser, log in to the Compute vCenter Server by using the vSphere Client.

  2. Upload the ESXi update image file to the vSphere Update Manager Server.
    1. Click Menu > Update Manager.
    2. From the Update Manager drop-down menu, select sfo01w01vc01.sfo01.rainpole.local
    3. Click ESXi Images, and click Import.
    4. On the Import ESXi Image page, click Browse, navigate to the VMware-VMvisor-Installer-201905001-13644319.x86_64.iso file, and click Open.
    5. Wait until the image file is imported and click Close.
  3. Create a baseline for the ESXi image.
    1. Click the Baselines tab and click New Baseline.
    2. In the Create Baseline wizard, follow the prompts and configure the following settings.

  4. Attach the baseline to the shared edge and compute cluster.
    1. In the Hosts and clusters inventory, expand the sfo01w01vc01.sfo01.rainpole.local tree and expand the sfo01-w01dc data center.
    2. Click the sfo01-w01-shared01 cluster.
    3. Click the Updates tab.
    4. Under Attached Baselines and Baseline Groups, click Attach > Attach Baseline or Baseline Group, select VMware Validated Design ESXI 6.7 U2 Upgrade, and click Attach.
  5. Configure the remediation settings for hosts and virtual machines.
    1. Click Menu > Update Manager.
    2. From the Update Manager drop-down menu, select sfo01w01vc01.sfo01.rainpole.local
    3. Click the Settings tab.
    4. Under Remediation Settings click Hosts.
    5. Click Edit, enter the settings for host remediation, and click Save.

    6. Under Remediation Settings, and click VMs.
    7. Click Edit, enter the default settings for VM rollback, and click Save.

  6. Scan the cluster for upgrades against the new baseline for compliance.
    1. In the Hosts and clusters inventory, expand the sfo01w01vc01.sfo01.rainpole.local tree and expand the sfo01-w01dc data center.
    2. Click the sfo01-w01-shared01 cluster.
    3. On the Updates tab, click Host Updates and click .
    4. In the Hosts are non-compliant pane, click Check Compliance.
      After the compliance check finishes, the Status column for the VMware Validated Design ESXi 6.7 U2 Upgrade baseline shows as Non-Compliant.
  7. Remediate the shared edge and compute cluster and upgrade the ESXi hosts that it contains.
    1. On the Updates tab, under Attached Baselines and Baseline Groups, select the VMware Validated Design ESXI 6.7 U2 Upgrade baseline and click Remediate.
    2. Configure the settings and click Remediate.

      After the remediation finishes, the Status column for the VMware Validated Design ESXi 6.7 U2 Upgrade baseline shows as Compliant.The remediation process might take several minutes.
  8. Repeat this procedure for the shared edge and compute cluster in Region B.
