Verify that when you place an ESXi host in maintenance mode, all virtual machines running on that host are evacuated and that the ESXi host enters into maintenance mode without further user interaction.

Validate that vMotion is correctly configured and that the network connectivity between the ESXi hosts is operational by placing each ESXi host in maintenance mode.

Expected Outcome

All virtual machines running on the ESXi host are migrated by using vMotion to the other ESXi hosts in the cluster. When vMotion completes the migration, the ESXi host enters into maintenance mode.

Procedure

  1. In a Web browser, log in to the management domain vCenter Server by using the vSphere Client.
    Setting Value
    URL https://sfo-m01-vc01.sfo.rainpole.io/ui
    User name administrator@vsphere.local
    Password vsphere_admin_password
  2. In the Hosts and clusters inventory, expand the sfo-m01-vc01.sfo.rainpole.io tree and expand the sfo-m01-dc01 data center.
  3. Expand the sfo-m01-cl01 cluster.
  4. Place the ESXi host in maintenance mode.
    1. Right-click the sfo01-m01-esx01.sfo.rainpole.io ESXi host and select Maintenance mode > Enter maintenance mode.
    2. In the Enter maintenance mode dialog box, from the vSAN data migration drop-down menu, select Ensure accessibility, and click OK.
When the sfo01-m01-esx01 ESXi host enters maintenance mode, the virtual machines are migrated to the other ESXi hosts in the cluster.
    3. On the warning dialog box, click Ok.
  5. To exit from maintenance mode, right-click the sfo01-m01-esx01.sfo.rainpole.io ESXi host and select Maintenance mode > Exit maintenance mode.
  6. Repeat the procedure for the remaining ESXi hosts from all vCenter Server Аppliances.

What to do next

If you encounter issues while performing this procedure, use the following troubleshooting tips:

Troubleshooting Tips
  • Ensure that the ESXi host has a VMkernel port configured for vMotion and that a static IP address is assigned.
  • Ensure that there is network connectivity between the ESXi hosts by running the vmkping command.
