What's in the Release Notes

The release notes cover the following topics:

New Features

WMware Workspace ONE Boxer 5.14.1

  • BINXA-10214: Tech Preview: Delegate Calendar
    • Delegation must be set up on the Outlook desktop client.
    • To add a delegator’s account in Boxer, navigate to Boxer Settings -> EmailAccount -> Delegate access -> Add delegate account.
    • All functionality for using delegated calendar (create, read, update and delete) are supported.
    • For manually fetching new content/refresh, you must go back to the inbox and pull from the top to refresh.
    • For more information about setups and FAQs, see Calendar Delegation in Workspace ONE Boxer for Android (Tech Preview) in the Boxer Admin Guide.

VMware Workspace ONE Boxer 5.14

  • BINXA-11477: Dark theme updates.
  • BINXA-11830: Farewell to POP3, this version of Boxer is the last to support POP3 Email accounts.

VMware Workspace ONE Boxer 5.13.1 for Android

  • This release resolves CVE-2020-3940. For more information on this vulnerability, see VMSA-2020-0001.

VMware Workspace ONE Boxer 5.13 for Android

  • To standardize the configuration of our productivity applications, in the near future Boxer will be removing the key AppForceActivateSSO from the Application Configuration settings. The new functionality will behave as if the key AppForceActivateSSO is set to true. Please make sure to test that your environment still works with this key set to true before we change the default to be true and remove the option to set it to false. Please test Login flows, passcode, and copy-in restriction. More information on AppForceActivateSSO can be found in the Boxer Admin Guide.
  • Dark theme support
    • We are excited to bring the dark theme to Boxer!
    • Android 10
      • The dark theme in Boxer is controlled by the system toggle for Dark theme that can be found in the notification tray and your device settings.
    • Android 9 (Pie)
      • The dark theme in Boxer is controlled by the battery saver toggle for Dark theme found in the notification tray and in your device settings.
      • For Samsung devices running Android Pie, we follow battery saver and not the system night mode toggle.
    • Android 8 (Oreo) and below
      • The dark theme in Boxer is controlled by the Select theme option in Boxer settings. Additionally, if your device has the battery saver option in system settings, we honor that setting.
    • Regardless of Android version, you can force Boxer to use the light or dark theme always from the Select theme option in the Boxer settings.
  • Sideloading S/MIME Certificates from Workspace ONE Web to Workspace ONE Boxer
    • S/MIME certificates (signing, encrypting and combination of both) can be installed to Boxer from Web downloads.
    • A custom SDK profile needs to be created and assigned to Workspace ONE Web to push down the KVP to enable this on the Web side.
      • Key: EnableCertificateShare
      • Value: true
    • S/MIME must be enabled in the Boxer Configuration. This information can be found in the Boxer Admin Guide.
    • To use on device:
      • Download the certificate in Workspace ONE Web
      • Open Downloads in Workspace ONE Web
      • Open into Boxer using the Open with share option
      • Enter the password for the certificate
      • See details for the certificate and tap Install
  • Check In/Check Out support for shared devices
    • Boxer for Android now supports Check In/Check Out. This allows for devices to be shared with multiple people where each user checks out the device to use and checks in the device once they have completed their use of it. This requires the use of the Workspace ONE Launcher app.
    • To setup Check In/Check Out, please see the Workspace ONE Launcher admin guide.
    • There are additional settings to make the Boxer experience better for users logging into Boxer including:
      • Suppressing the Data Privacy screen
        • The configuration and setup can be found in the Boxer Admin guide in the section titled Configuring Privacy Settings for Workspace ONE Boxer.
      • Skipping the in-app tutorials
        • Key: AppShowFirstTimeTutorials (bool)
        • Value: True (default), set to False to disable the in-app tutorials
      • Skipping the Battery Optimization screen. This is only recommended if you have another way to adding Boxer to the Battery optimization whitelist. If you do not add Boxer to the whitelist, syncing and notifications may be delayed.
        • Key: AppShowOptOutBatteryOptimizationScreen (bool)
        • Value: True (default), set to False to disable this screen from showing up.

VMware Workspace ONE Boxer 5.12 for Android

  • Modern Auth Fallback improvements.
    • We have made improvements to what happens when Modern Auth fails and the user needs to revert to entering a password to authenticate.

VMware Workspace ONE Boxer 5.11 for Android

  • Workspace ONE Boxer v5.11 for Android will be the last version to support Android 5.0. Moving forward from v5.12 and on, Android 5.1 will be the lowest supported version.

  • Use UTF-8 decoding for authentication by default
    • Changes were previously made to change the encoding in Boxer to ISO-8859-1 to support additional German characters.
    • We are now changing back to UTF-8 to allow us to support more characters, but UTF-8 does not support umlaut characters.
    • If you would like to switch the encoding back to ISO-8859-1 to support umlaut characters, please use the KVP below
      • KVP: EnableNewAuthEncoding (bool)
      • Value: true (to enable umlauts to be used), or false (default)
  • Enterprise Content in Boxer
    • We are excited to introduce our new Enterprise Content which brings parts of the VMware Workspace ONE Content application into Boxer for viewing attachments, attaching files to emails from online repositories and saving attachments from emails to online repositories.
    • This requires repositories to be configured on the UEM Console.
    • Enterprise Content requires the KVP AppForceActivateSSO (bool) set to true
    • Enterprise Content also requires the KVP PolicyAllowEnterpriseContent (bool) set to true.
    • Please see our document titled Enterprise Content 101 attached for the full details on supported repositories and configuration.
  • Email Draft Sync
    • We are happy to introduce the syncing of draft messages to Exchange.
    • This requires Exchange 2016 or Office 365
    • A banner in Boxer’s Email list view will prompt the end user to resync all folders to enable this new feature.
  • ICS file support
    • Boxer now supports viewing and adding ICS files your calendar.
    • Please note that ICS files are designed to be a snapshot in time of a calendar event(s). Therefore, updating an event originating from an ICS file will not function the same as an event that has been created from Boxer or another client and synced with the server.
  • QuickJoin for online meetings with support for additional vanity URLs
    • This feature, as an extension of OneTap Dialing, brings Skype for Business, Webex, and Zoom meeting links into the quick info area at the top of meetings for easily joining online meeting
    • This update brings support for additional vanity URLs (URLs that don’t specifically have the words Webex and Zoom in them) which is common in an on-premises setup.
    • Please use the KVP below to configure Boxer to pick up vanity URLs
      • Key: PolicyCustomOnlineMeetingUrls (string)
      • Value: JSON formatted string. We recommend validating the format externally before pasting into the UEM Console.
      • Example:
   "skype”: [
   "zoom”: [
   "webex”: [
