You can add a PVRDMA adapter to your vSphere Bitfusion client to improve the performance of your AI and ML workflows.

Follow this procedure to configure a new network adapter on your vSphere Bitfusion client for data traffic over a PVRDMA adapter.

Prerequisites

  • Verify that your vSphere environment has a PVRDMA distributed network configured. For more information, see the vSphere Networking documentation.
  • Verify that you configured the first network adapter of your vSphere Bitfusion client for management traffic by using a default adapter type such as VMXNET3.
  • Verify that you are using a supported configuration for PVRDMA. See PVRDMA Requirements.
  • Verify that the virtual machine of your vSphere Bitfusion client is powered off.

Procedure

  1. Locate the virtual machine of your vSphere Bitfusion client in the vSphere Client.
  2. Right-click the virtual machine in the inventory and select Edit Settings.
  3. On the Virtual Hardware tab, click the Add New Device button.
  4. Under Network, select Network Adapter.
  5. From the New Network drop-down menu, select a PVRDMA network to connect the virtual machine to.
  6. Expand the New Network section and from the Adapter Type drop-down menu, select a PVRDMA adapter to assign to the virtual machine.
  7. Change the Status setting to Connect At Power On.
  8. Power on the VM of your vSphere Bitfusion client.
  9. If your vSphere Bitfusion client is using a static IP addresses, in the operating system of the client, configure the IP address of the network interface.
The configuration of your network adapter in the operating system must be the same as the configuration of the adapter in vCenter Server.
  10. Install the RDMA drivers and diagnostic tools on your vSphere Bitfusion client.
    • For CentOS and Red Hat Linux, run the following command.
      yum install -y open-vm-tools rdma-core libibverbs libibverbs-utils infiniband-diags
    • For Ubuntu Linux, run the following command.
      sudo apt-get install -y rdma-core ibverbs-providers infiniband-diags ibutils ibverbs-utils rdmacm-utils perftest

Results

You have successfully enabled your vSphere Bitfusion client to use a PVRDMA network adapter.
