vRealize Log Insight agents support several log rotation schemes.
Log rotation ensures that log files do not grow infinitely. There are several log rotation schemes, each designed for a particular set of use cases.
vRealize Log Insight includes native support for the following schemes.
Log rotation scheme | Description |
---|---|
create-new |
New log files are created when a size or time limit is reached. The logger process stops writing to the current log file and directs log output to a newly created file. No existing file is renamed or touched in any other way. |
rename-recreate |
An external utility such as logrotate renames the log file when a size or time limit is reached. The logger process then creates a log file with the previous name. |
copy-truncate |
An external utility such as logrotate copies the log file when a size or time limit is reached. The log process renames the copied file and truncates the original file so that its size becomes 0. The logger process can continue to write logs to the original file. |
