The vCenter Server upgrade includes a database schema upgrade, migration of vCenter Single Sign-On to Platform Services Controller, and upgrade of the vCenter Server software.

vCenter Server for Windows upgrade options depend upon your existing deployment.

  • For vCenter Server for Windows 5.0, you can choose to configure either an embedded or an external Platform Services Controller during the upgrade.
  • For a vCenter Server for Windows 5.1 or 5.5 configuration with services deployed on a single virtual machine or physical server, you can upgrade to vCenter Server with an embedded Platform Services Controller.
  • For a vCenter Server for Windows 5.1 or 5.5 configuration with vCenter Single Sign-On deployed on a different virtual machine or physical server than vCenter Server, you must start by upgrading the vCenter Single Sign-On instance to an external Platform Services Controller deployment.
  • If you have multiple instances of vCenter Server, concurrent upgrades are not supported and upgrade order matters. See Mixed-Version Transitional Environments in vCenter Server for Windows Upgrades.
