The process for using your on-premises infrastructure with VMware Cloud Foundation+ starts with purchasing a subscription and then applying the subscription to an Organization in VMware Cloud services.
You can either purchase a new subscription or upgrade your existing licenses to subscription. Subscriptions are for a predefined period of one or three years. When you are ready to purchase a subscription, contact a VMware sales representative or a VMware partner who will help you with the subscription that suits your VMware Cloud Foundation environment or purchase one directly through the VMware Cloud Universal program.
A VMware Cloud Foundation+ subscription also includes VMware® Tanzu Standard Runtime Edition, which you can use after you add your VMware Cloud Foundation instance to the subscription.
Determine the Required Subscription Capacity
VMware Cloud Foundation+ subscription capacity is based on the capacity units of vSphere+ and vSAN+. The capacity is based on the total number of physical CPU cores of each CPU on all the ESXi hosts associated with the VMware Cloud Foundation instances that you plan to subscribe to VMware Cloud Foundation+. Similarly, for vSAN storage, subscription capacity is based on the total number of physical CPU cores for each CPU on all the ESXi hosts associated with the vSAN clusters managed by VMware Cloud Foundation.
You must purchase a minimum capacity of 16 cores per CPU.
Subscription capacity = number of cores required per CPU × number of CPUs per ESXi host × number of ESXi hosts
You can determine the required subscription capacity in the following way.
ESXi Hosts |
Physical CPUs per ESXi Host |
Cores per CPU |
Subscription Capacity Required |
Calculation |
---|---|---|---|---|
2 |

8 |
64 |
Though the number of cores is 8 on each CPU, you must purchase 64 cores because the minimum subscription capacity is 16 cores per CPU and there are 2 CPUs on each of the 2 ESXi hosts. |

Subscription capacity is the total number of cores × number of CPUs × number of ESXi hosts. |
Any additional usage beyond the number of cores you purchase is charged based on the overage pricing for which you sign up at the time of purchase.
Purchase Options
You can purchase subscriptions from multiple sources. Purchasing from different sources results in a different seller of record being associated with the purchased resources. The seller of record is responsible for billing the resources purchased from them. The seller of record also determines attributes such as payment types, terms of service, catalog, region, and currency. Multiple options help you to select the best seller attributes for your organization.

Procedure
What to Do After You Purchase and Apply a Subscription
After you purchase a VMware Cloud Foundation+ subscription and apply it your Organization, add Organization members and connect your on-premises deployments to VMware Cloud.
In VMware Cloud Console, review the instructions on the Journey Map page.
Next, perform these tasks.
Add members who will also manage your VMware Cloud Foundation+ environment to your Organization in VMware Cloud services. See Managing Organization Accounts.
Provide a VMware Cloud Foundation 4.5.x or VMware Cloud Foundation 5.0 deployment.
If you plan a clean deployment of VMware Cloud Foundation to manage your infrastructure, deploy VMware Cloud Foundation in subscription-ready mode, activated in the deployment parameter workbook before bring-up. See Deployment Overview of VMware Cloud Foundation.
Upgrade your deployment to VMware Cloud Foundation 4.5.x or VMware Cloud Foundation 5.0.
When upgrading from version 4.3 or version 4.4, at a minimum, you must upgrade the management domain to VMware Cloud Foundation 4.5 or upgrade the management domain to VMware Cloud Foundation 5.0, and apply an async patch for vCenter Server 7.0 Update 3h to the vCenter Server instances for the VI workload domains.
Connect the deployment to VMware Cloud Foundation+ by using a VMware Cloud Gateway instance. See Connect VMware Cloud Foundation to VMware Cloud.
