Data Management for VMware Tanzu (DMS) is a VMware solution that offers a data-as-a-service toolkit for on-demand provisioning and automated management of PostgreSQL and MySQL databases on vSphere infrastructure. DMS provides both a graphical user interface and a REST API in the toolkit, enabling both administrators and developers to get the most out of the service.

With Data Management for VMware Tanzu, you create and manage foundational data services through a centralized platform:

  • Data Management for VMware Tanzu simplifies management for administrators by operating as a fleet management tool; it provides a centralized view of an organization's data service instances running on multi-cloud infrastructure.
  • Database users can benefit from DMS's self-service capabilities to create new data service instances, or to operate on existing instances safely and securely, without requiring infrastructure or database expertise.
  • Data Management for VMware Tanzu also provides full automation for provisioning data service instances, backups, security patches, and periodic updates of the data service engine.

If the volume and scale of your data is growing, Data Management for VMware Tanzu can help you reduce the time that you spend on the admistrative tasks related to your data infrastructure. You can also leverage an existing investment in vSphere infrastructure (on-premise, on-cloud, or by cloud provider) with DMS.

Learn About Data Management for VMware Tanzu User Roles

There are three primary user roles in Data Management for VMware Tanzu:

  • A Provider Administrator user provisions and maintains the essential infrastructure services in the Data Management for VMware Tanzu installation.
  • An Organization Administrator user plans, administers, and secures resources for data services, and closely partners with the Provider Administrator to register infrastructure.
  • A user in the Organization User role is often an application developer that translates business and product objectives into application code. This user typically requires self-service access to quickly provision data service instances for their application.

Learn About Setting Up Data Management for VMware Tanzu

VMware distributes the Data Management for VMware Tanzu control plane as an .ova on Tanzu Network and on VMware Customer Connect; the Provider Administrator user installs this .ova on vSphere. This virtual machine (VM) requires access to object storage and to other endpoints in your corporate ecosystem.

After the VM is installed, the Provider Administrator configures the organizations and users that will access the Data Management for VMware Tanzu web console or API, and curates the database versions for the installation.

An Agent must be installed on each vSphere cluster that will host the data services. This agent is also an .ova that an Organization Administrator user installs on vSphere, and uses to onboard (register) the infrastructure with the Data Management for VMware Tanzu control plane.

Learn About the Data Management for VMware Tanzu Console

The Data Management for VMware Tanzu console is an interactive web interface through which you manage the DMS service or infrastructure, or use to provision, manage, and monitor your data services. The views and actions available from the console differ based on your user role.

Using the Documentation

In addition to concepts and other common information, the documentation provides three role-focused guides:

  • Installation and Configuration Guide (Provider Administrator and Organization Administrator users)
