VMware Data Services Manager allows you to configure Log Forwarding for the Provider VM, Agent VM, and provisioned databases. For Log Forwarding, as a Provider Administrator, you can either configure a Syslog server, a vRealize Log Insight agent, or Elastic Search.

You can also generate on-demand logs for the Provider VM, Agent VM and provisioned databases.

Logs can be analysed to improve productivity of the system, deduce trends, or to troubleshoot, as required.

You can learn how to configure Syslog server and Elastic Search through the following topics:

Enabling Log Forwarding

To enable Log Forwarding, perform the following steps:

  1. Log in to the VMware Data Services Manager console as a Provider Administrator.

  2. Select Settings from the left navigation pane.

This action displays the Information tab in the Settings view.

  3. Click the Log Forwarding tab in the Settings view, and then click EDIT.

  4. Toggle Log Forwarding from OFF to ON, and then for Log Forwarding, select Elastic Search or Syslog in the Log Server Setting form.

  5. Set the other values in the Log Server Setting form, and then click SAVE.

Deactivating Log Forwarding

To deactivate Log Forwarding, perform the following steps:

  1. Log in to the VMware Data Services Manager console as a Provider Administrator.

  2. Select Settings from the left navigation pane.

This action displays the Information tab in the Settings view.

  3. Click the Log Forwarding tab in the Settings view, and then click EDIT.

  4. Toggle Log Forwarding from ON to OFF, and then click UPDATE in the Log Server Setting form.

Note: If you do not configure Syslog server, vRealize Log Insight agent, or Elastic Search for your VMware Data Services Manager installation, you are responsible for pulling and aggregating logs of Provider VM, Agent VM, and provisioned database that are stored in local or cloud storage.
