VMware Data Services Manager is a VMware solution that offers a data-as-a-service toolkit for on-demand provisioning and automated management of PostgreSQL and MySQL databases on vSphere environment. VMware Data Services Manager provides both a graphical user interface and a REST API in the toolkit, enabling both administrators and developers to get the most out of the service.

With VMware Data Services Manager, you create and manage foundational databases through a centralized platform:

  • VMware Data Services Manager simplifies management for administrators by operating as a fleet management tool; it provides a centralized view of an organization's data in databases running on multi-cloud environment.
  • Database users can benefit from VMware Data Services Manager's self-service capabilities to create new data in databases, or to operate on existing databases safely and securely, without requiring environment or database expertise.
  • VMware Data Services Manager also provides full automation for provisioning data in databases, backups, security patches, and periodic updates of the engine of databases.

If the volume and scale of your data is growing, VMware Data Services Manager can help you reduce the time that you spend on the admistrative tasks related to your data environment. You can also leverage an existing investment in vSphere environment (on-premise, on-cloud, or by cloud provider) with VMware Data Services Manager.

Learn About VMware Data Services Manager User Roles

There are three primary user roles in VMware Data Services Manager:

  • A Provider Administrator user provisions and maintains the essential environment services in the VMware Data Services Manager installation.
  • An Organization Administrator user plans, administers, and secures resources for databases, and closely partners with the Provider Administrator to register an environment.
  • A user in the Organization User role is often an application developer that translates business and product objectives into application code. This user typically requires self-service access to quickly provision data in databases for their application.

Learn About Setting Up VMware Data Services Manager

VMware distributes the VMware Data Services Manager control plane as an .ova on Tanzu Network and on VMware Customer Connect; the Provider Administrator user installs this .ova on vSphere. This virtual machine (VM) requires access to object storage and to other endpoints in your corporate ecosystem.

After the VM is installed, the Provider Administrator configures the organizations and users that will access the VMware Data Services Manager web console or API, and curates the database versions for the installation.

An Agent must be installed on each vSphere cluster or VMC cluster that will host the databases. This agent is also an .ova that an Organization Administrator user installs on vSphere, and uses to onboard (register) the environment with the VMware Data Services Manager control plane.

Learn About the VMware Data Services Manager Console

The VMware Data Services Manager console is an interactive web interface through which you manage the service or environment, or use to provision, manage, and monitor your databases. The views and actions available from the console differ based on your user role.

Using the Documentation

The VMware Data Services Manager documentation reflects the latest content describing the service. This content is regularly updated to provide the most current information available.

In addition to concepts and other common information, the documentation provides three role-focused guides:

  • Installation and Configuration Guide (Provider Administrator and Organization Administrator users)
  • Service Provider Guide (Provider Administrator users)
  • Service User Guide (Organization Administrator, Organization User users)

If you choose, you can add VMware Data Services Manager content to custom VMware documentation collections using MyLibrary.
