Due to resource exhaustion or change in requirements of resources, you may need to make modifications in environments in VMware Data Services Manager. A vCenter administrator can do resource modifications in the vCenter. Apart from scheduled updates to environments and VMs that occur once in 24 hours, a Provider Administrator or an Organization Administrator can use VMware Data Services Manager to sync environments with the vCenter resource modifications on demand.

The databases that are part of the environment for which resources have been modified are also synced with the resource updates.

Prerequisites

Before you perform on-demand syncing of an environment with the modified vCenter resources, ensure that you onboard the environment to VMware Data Services Manager.

Limitations

The limitations for databases with respect to syncing vCenter resources are as follows:

  • As a first step after the resources are modified at vCenter by the vSphere admin, sync the resources from VMware Data Services Manager either manually or on a scheduled mode.

  • After you have synced resources modified in vCenter with VMware Data Services Manager, you must edit the environment associated with the database to apply the changes in network or datastore. Otherwise, the changed resource is displayed as an Unknown Datastore or Unknown Network in the Environment section of the VM Settings tab of the databases that are part of the environment. To know more about editing an environment to include a network or a datastore from the list of onboarded datastores and networks, see Updating Networks and Updating VM Datastores. You must also edit the namespaces with which the databases are created to update the change in the resources.

  • After changes are made in the vCenter resources, if a database is moved to a different datastore and if that datastore is not part of the environment, then the disk extension function for that database is affected. Also, the datastore for the database is displayed as Unknown Datastore in the Environment section of the VM Settings tab of the database despite syncing vCenter resources.

  • After changes are made in the vCenter resources, if a database is moved to a different network and if that network is not associated with the environment, the network for the database is displayed as Unknown Network in the Environment section of the VM Settings tab of the database despite syncing vCenter resources.

Procedure

Perform the following steps to sync an environment with the modified vCenter resources on demand:

  1. Navigate to the Environments view of the Environments pane in VMware Data Services Manager as a Provider Administrator or an Organization Administrator, click the environment that you want to sync with the vCenter resources.

The Details tab of the environment appears.

  2. In the Environment Information section of the Details tab, click the ENVIRONMENT ACTIONS drop-down in the top right side, and then select Sync vCenter Resources.

You can view the success of the operation in the Operations pane.

  3. After the SYNC VCENTER RESOURCES operation completes successfully, click the refresh icon on the top right side of the Environments view to see the updated resources of the environment in the Details tab.
