Amazon Simple Storage Service (AWS S3) is an object storage solution that lets you to import or export VM files in highly available and easy-to-use buckets. You can add and configure your own AWS S3 instance with VMware Lab Platform.

To import files from an AWS S3 instance to VMware Lab Platform:

Procedure

  1. Activate the Portal Settings > Configuration > awsBucketEnabled setting.

    When you enable the awsBucketEnabled option, the import and export options for AWS are made available in the Lab Templates page. Additionally, you can also configure the other AWS configurations either from the Portal Settings > Configuration > AWS setting, or on the Import to S3 form.

  2. To import an OVF file from AWS, click Lab Management > Lab Builder.
    Attention:

    Only OVF files are supported for AWS imports. You cannot import OVA files to your AWS instance.

  3. Click the three ellipses on the top-right of the page, and select Import from S3.
  4. Enter the details in the Import From S3 form.

    If the AWS details are added in the Portal Settings > Configuration > AWS setting, the Import from S3 form auto populates that information in the form. You can modify the data on the Import from S3 form.

    Option Description

    Bucket Name

    The name of the AWS S3 Bucket.

    Path within the bucket

    Enter the path to the OVF files to be imported. This should be a directory containing 'descriptor-with-id.ovf and .vmdk files.

    Access Key ID

    Enter the AWS API key.

    Access Key Secret

    Enter the AWS API secret to be used with the AWS Key.

    AWS Role ARN

    (Optional) Enter the Amazon Resource Name (ARN) of a role with access to the Bucket.

    AWS Region

    Enter the Bucket's AWS region.

    Session Token

    (Optional)For temporary credentials retrieved through AWS Security Token Service (AWS STS).

    Target Template Name

    Enter the name for the template in the virtual cloud director.

    Target Catalog URN

    Select the target catalog URN from the drop-down menu.

  5. Click Import From S3.

    After a file is added, there is a waiting time before the file is available for use. You can see the file transfer progress in the Content Migration Task widget on the Dashboard widget.
