A discovery filter can be broad to discover a broad range of systems, or restrictive to limit the number or type of discovered systems.

For a filter’s IP address range, system name, system description, and system OID fields, you can use wildcards to create a matching pattern. As an example, in GUID-9735DF66-F79C-40C2-A022-D468C3783BDD.html#GUID-9735DF66-F79C-40C2-A022-D468C3783BDD___IP_CONCEPTS_DISCOVERY_83506, the asterisk (*) in the IP address range, system name, system description, and system OID fields is a wildcard character that matches any arbitrary string of characters, including an empty string. The discovery filter in GUID-9735DF66-F79C-40C2-A022-D468C3783BDD.html#GUID-9735DF66-F79C-40C2-A022-D468C3783BDD___IP_CONCEPTS_DISCOVERY_83506 will match any candidate system that is a Switch. Appendix A, “Terminology,” discusses wildcard syntax.

The following examples illustrate different types of discovery filters.
