When problems occur in a WDM network, many alarms are generated as a result. For instance, if a fiber goes down inside a network element, there may be an LOS generated at a downstream circuit pack, and up to 80 LOS alarms generated on transponders whose input signals are carried by the fiber. If wavelengths have been added and dropped along the light path, these alarms can occur at various point across the network. The Optical Transport Manager uses the local LOS alarm as a symptom of the root-cause problem (WdmLink Down) and identifies the transponder LOS alarms as being impacts of the underlying root-cause problem.
