Add a new workload cluster in vSphere with Tanzu

After you have registered a TKG Supervisor, you can use Tanzu Platform to provision resources and create a new workload cluster.

Before you begin

This procedure assumes that you have a vSphere with Tanzu deployment, and that you have already registered its Supervisor. For more information, see Register a Supervisor in Tanzu Platform.

  • Make sure you have the appropriate permissions to create a new cluster.
  • Make sure you have already created the cluster group in which you want to place the new cluster.
  • Your workload clusters require at least 4 vCPUs and 8 GB of RAM per node.

To enable Tanzu Application Engine, make sure your cluster abides by the following additional guidelines.

  • Environment: Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Service Supervisor running in vSphere with Tanzu (vSphere 8 Update 2c and later).
  • Your workload cluster requires a minimum of 3 nodes, each with 4 vCPUs, and 16 GB of RAM.

Depending on your chosen approach, make sure you have done one of the following:

Add a new workload cluster

You can add an new workload cluster using Tanzu Platform hub.

Tanzu Platform hub
Perform the following steps in Tanzu Platform hub:
  1. In Tanzu Platform hub, select the project in which you want to add a new cluster.
  2. In the left navigation pane, click to expand Infrastructure, and then click Kubernetes Clusters.
  3. On the Kubernetes Clusters page, click the Clusters tab.
  4. Click Add Cluster, and then select Create Tanzu Kubernetes Grid cluster.
  5. Select the management cluster and provisioner (vSphere namespace) into which you want to create the workload cluster, and then click Next.
  6. Enter a name for the cluster, and specify the cluster group.
The cluster name must start and end with a letter or number, contain only lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens, and be a maximum length of 63 characters.
To enable support for Tanzu Application Engine, the cluster group you specify must be enabled for Tanzu Application Engine.

  7. Select the cluster class that you want to use as the template for this cluster. The list of cluster classes that you can choose from is taken from the provisioner (vSphere namespace) in your Supervisor.

  8. You can optionally add a description and label.
    Note

To make it easier to create an availability target on a cluster, create one or more labels that help you identify the cluster. For more information, see Use Availability Targets.

  9. Click Next.
  10. Configure the control plane.
  11. Configure node pools.
  12. After you have finished configuring your cluster, click Create.
