Upgrading VMware NSX from version 3.2.0.1 to 4.1.0.2 involves upgrading its components in the following order: Edges, Hosts, and Management Nodes.

Prerequisites

  1. Review the NSX Upgrade Checklist to track your work on the NSX upgrade process.

  2. Prepare your infrastructure for the NSX upgrade.

  3. Back up the NSX Manager in the NSX 3.2.0.1 environment.

Procedure

  1. Run the NSX Upgrade Evaluation Tool.
  2. Upgrade NSX from version 3.2.0.1 to 4.1.0.2.
    Note:

If you are using N-VDS, upgrade NSX in the following sequence:

    1. Upgrade NSX from 3.2.0.1 to 3.2.1.

    2. Migrate the host switch to VDS.

    3. Upgrade NSX from 3.2.1 to 4.1.0.2.

NSX 4.1.0.2 uses VDS for transport node. Therefore, before upgrading NSX from 3.2.0.1 to 4.1.0.2, you must migrate the host switch to VDS. NSX 3.2.0.1 does not support this migration, so you must upgrade NSX in the specified sequence.

What to do next

  1. Perform Post-Upgrade Tasks to verify whether the upgrade is successful.

  2. After the NSX upgrade is successful, verify the clusters prepared for NSX:

    1. Log in to NSX manager by using the Virtual IP (VIP) address.

    2. Navigate to System > Fabric > Node > Host Transport Nodes.

    3. Verify that all the clusters prepared for NSX are in Success state without any error.

    4. If there is any error on the ESXi hosts in the cluster, reconfigure transport node by selecting the CONFIGURE NSX option on the cluster using the existing transport node profile. If there is any other upgrade issue, see Troubleshooting Upgrade Failures.
