The following is an example configuration for VMware vSphere Ha. The details provided are specific to the testbed and are only a reference for what a typical configuration looks like.

Procedure

  1. Create Datacenter.
    1. Create a datacenter in your vCenter. The following example shows the datacenter name as TCO-Datacenter.
  2. Create Cluster.
    1. Create a cluster in the datacenter. The following examples shows the cluster name as TCO-Cluster.
  3. Add ESXi(s).
    1. Add all the ESXi hosts to the cluster. The cluster should look similar to the following:
  4. Configure Networking.
    1. Create a Distributed Switch using the properties in the following example. The Distributed Switch is named DSwitch.

    2. Create a Distributed Port Group using the properties in the following example. The port group is named DPortGroup.

    3. Create an ESXi Management Port Group using the properties in the following example. The port group is named ESXi-Mgmt-PG.

    4. Create another Port Group for VM traffic using the properties in the following example. The Port Group name is Mgmt-1000.

    5. Create a vMotion Port Group with properties as shown in figures below. In our example we have named this port group vMotion-PG.

    6. Create a vSAN Port Group with properties as shown in figures below. In our example we have named this port group vSAN-PG.

    7. For each ESXi host create three vM Kernel adapters. One for the ESXi-Management, the second for vMotion and one for vSAN with the properties as shown in the figures below. For the vMotion and vSAN adapters configure IP addressing as per the requirements of your environment (for example, static or DHCP). The following represents settings for one ESXi host. The remaining hosts are configured similarly.

    8. For each EXSi configure, two Physical adapters with all the properties as shown in the figures below. Add uplinks to the Distributed Switch. The following represents settings for one ESXi host with the remaining being similar.

    9. For each ESXi the topology maps for the Distributed Switch should look as follows:

    10. The topology map for the Distributed Switch should look as follows:

  5. Configure Shared Storage (vSAN)

Configure shared storage based on the available storage technology you have. We have configured vSAN for TCO-Cluster as shown below accepting default values for configuration. The storage for the vSAN is pooled from all the ESXi hosts taking one third of the storage for cache and the rest for capacity tiers. The name of the datastore in our sample configuration is vsanDatastore

  6. Configure DRS.
Turn on DRS in your cluster and accept all defaults as follows:

  7. Configure HA.
Turn on HA in your cluster you may accept all defaults shown in the following example or configure your environment as needed.
